6241 non PN

hi guys
pretty new here, and enjoying using the forum and the archives to learn this stuff. thanks very much for all the knowledge and enthusiasm here

in researching the 6239 and 6241, a google of the 6241 shows that it is nearly impossible to find pics of one that does not have a newman dial. why is that? where are all the non-PN 6241's - shouldn't the situation be the reverse?

obviously i'm not experienced with the actual watches, and this observation based purely on internet research. punch '6239' into google images and you get the whole gamut of images, plenty of silver, black, no shortage of pn. '6263' - mostly regular dials, some pn. '6265' - same, tons of black and silver, some scattered pn.

now try that with '6241' - pretty much only pn, literally one or two regular dials

so jedly, when you say you see both, i know they exist, but i guess i'm not sure i understand how to explain the paucity of images and google references for this particular reference. was there something particular with their production numbers?

You are correct in your observations. In the past 15 years, I have constantly sought out Daytonas, and, in particular, I prefer the plastic bezel pushbutton versions. I have probably seen 200 6241 examples in steel in those years, and, of those, I would guess only 10 or so had the standard dial configuration (non-Paul Newman). I don't know why. But that is definitely the case.

and btw, you've handled 200 of the 6241 alone? crikey, that's amazing.

I guess the cynical answer would be that as the 6241pn has for a very long time commanded a premium over both a regular dialed 6241 and even a 6239pn AND as there was no shortage of Texas dials all the way through the 90' and early 2000's that required cases .......

If I am honest every time I've heard of or seen a loose dial come available and sell the next thing is almost always placing a wtb advert for a plain 6241 !!!

More likely though is the above but also combined with steel bezel model being a better seller ( or easier supply by Rolex).

There are for sure a lot lot more 6262 than 6264 period.

Yeah, I figure about 15-20 per year is about right, so probably around 200. And I believe that, for some reason, the 6241 was just supplied with the Newman style dial more than most other Daytona references. Not sure why.
