I have no doubt that my mother knew what was going on based on her life-long loyalty to my dad and on her responses (or lack thereof) to my daughters' questions. I am more confused than ever now. For whatever reason, my childhood and even later life was what it was.

Whatever my dad did, I'm confident that he wasn't involved in criminal behavior, as he was a good man and after death had nothing to show for a life of crime financially. I am more convinced than before, however, that an answer is probably not coming in this life. Thanks for all of your ideas and input.

Joey, I hope you find some peace with this. I am the kind of person that would be burning with curisosity and I'm not sure I could ever put out the fire completely. It is really fascinating reading all this, but I believe you fully about him being a good man. I think whatever he did was probably very important, perhaps more than we can guess.

I don't want to belittle it in any way, but maybe you can just hold it in your thoughts that he did something secret, important, and meaningful. Having it to remember this way is pretty cool I think.

The safest place for your watch is on your wrist.

My thoughts are more on how well your parents have passed on "the right stuff" to you. Although you mention some issues with your childhood years, you have had a successful medical career and raised a wonderful family. Good parents try and do the best they can for their children.

Thanks, Gordon and Patrick. I have nothing to complain about in life, that is certain. My interest in this question often refires on Veterans Day, as it did this year. I fairly sure that if I don't know the answers by now, I'm not likely to ever know.
