Thoughts about Rolex
Hi guys,
I'm new to the forum and I'm pretty sure there would have been many others who, like me, have been getting opinions on which Rolex to get but I would really appreciate some honest opinions from those in the know. I'm planning on buying my very first Rolex in a month or two. I have been eyeing the Rolex Submariner 116613LN for a long time and I honestly think its a really fantastic and versatile watch and one that I could wear....well, literally, everywhere! It's something that I could do laps in the pool and its fancy enough to wear with a business suit. My wife and a close buddy of mine have been trying to convince me that getting the new Explorer 2 is a much better idea. It doesn't scream Rolex and its more discreet and stuff and that I could always get a Jaeger Reverso as a dress watch. What do you guys think? |

Absolutely get the watch that YOU want! In the end you will regret and second guess another purchase. Both are fine watches and I am even inclined to go with the Exp for you, however, the one that sings to you it the one to get. Good luck.

I think if you have your heart set on the Sub then get the Sub. After spending all that money you don't want to be looking at your wrist all day and having that expensive watch not quite do it for you. It will bug you until you finally sell the Explorer and buy the one you wanted all along. Your friends and family won't be wearing it so get the one you want.

Buy the Rolex that your wife likes best.
Especially when its an Expy II. That is a no lose situation IMO.

Agreed, its alot of money to spend on something you are "just okay" with.
Go for the one that will make your wife jealous of how long you spend staring at it. |

It's going to be your watch, you are going to be wearing it and you will be the one trading the Explorer in for the Sub if you go with what other's like and not what you like. BTW, welcome to TRF!

A watch is personal. I never solicite opinions because mine is the only one that matters in this case.

Ultimately it's for you. If you settle for a second choice, at some time in the future you will purchase or trade for your first choice!

It's gonna be your watch, and on your wrist. So buy what you like.
Sounds like your heart is set on that Sub, so that should be the final answer. If you don't follow your heart, regret will follow. Congrats in advance. |

Go with your heart and it seems like the Sub has your interest. You are the one that wears it.

Don't worry...once you get the Sub you will want another Rolex model! You can't just have "1" Rolex! Most here will agree with that statement!

Welcome, I don't care how many watches you intend to buy, each and every time you should buy the make and model YOU like. Good Luck.

Your wife seems to know what's up. Except I'd go with the exp ii 40, and the reverso, pref the 1931. That's a awesome combo...

Have you thought about the 114060? It doesn't have the cyclops and may help overcome the concern of it looking too much like a Rolex, etc.

I'd go Sub first, you can always pick up an Explorer II if you want to add to your collection. I believe the sub can be dressed up easier than the Explorer II.

A couple of thoughts: The Sub is a great watch. I happen to prefer the GMT II over the Sub. I would also consider the Explorer II which I absolutely love but my preference in that model is the older 16570 in Polar however the black face is nice as well.

The Submariner is what you want if you are proud that you own a Rolex. Its very common and recognizable. The Explorer is the..."I want a Rolex but dont want anyone to know" watch.

The TT subc is a beautiful watch so get that if you really want it, its far too much money to spend on a watch that will primarily make others happy. And remember maybe your wife will get everything nice you own after you're divorced, but not before!

Firstly, welcome to TRF.
This forum has a massive amount of knowledgeable members who will give excellent advice. One word of caution though- one Rolex is never enough. In my experience I have found two Rolex that are perfect (for me). The Yacht-Master & the original Seadweller (SD). For you, I would suggest trying a SD against the Sub. The SD is a little thicker but on the wrist feels fantastic. Plus, even Rolex haters respect the SD. But ultimately, as my TRF colleagues have said, the choice can only be made by you, so buy what you like!

Welcome to TRF. The 116613LN is a beautiful reference. If that is the watch YOU want, then that is the one you should go for. You shouldn't buy a reference to make someone else happy. If you do purchase the Explorer II, you're still going to want the Sub.
Also, as Greg has said it's tough to stop at just one Rolex! |

Welcome to the maddness.
Save urself some time and realize now that you will eventually have both. Buy the one you think you will be most comfortable with, until you get the other.

Get the Sub, it's your watch. Although the JLC reverso is a beautiful watch.

You only need two watches- one sport and one dress. Now your correct about the sub and double duty if you must get it over the exp- that's ok, but by all means still get the reverso.

I think you should get the watch you like. Don't get a watch that somebody else wants you to get.
