I saw this Silky shark coming at me in the open ocean off the Galapagos Islands (while wearing my Sea-Dweller). I did NOT, however, see his partner, although I felt him when he banged into the back of my hip.

Had a close encounter with a Tiger Shark in the Red Sea about 5 years ago think that was the only time I really got scared underwater.Took a hit on air tank by a quite a large Oceanic White Tip on the Elphinestone reef Red Sea that made me gulp extra air for a bit, and put a extra lump in my wet suite .

So are hammerheads prone to eating humans? That's a huge group and I'd hate to be part or (or witness) a feeding frenzy.

Tell me about it. I know they frequent the Gulf of St. Lawrence, along with Blue Whales too. We should be going to the gulf coast of Newfoundland next month and I hope there's whale watching, even if it is freakin' cold... but this is the time of year to see blue whales (and Belugas, since they are populous in the gulf too).

Have a good time. I once saw whales in the Inside Passage along the Alaska coast when we took an Alaskan cruise a few years ago. Actually saw one or two flip their tails out and dive, just like in the pictures.

All of the photos are in proportion (1:1). What you see is what you get. The whale shark was about 40 feet long. It was the biggest of six our group saw in three days of diving off Darwin Island at the northern tip of the Galapagos chain. I only got to see one, and this was it. But it was worth it!

The silky and hammerhead sharks were between six and eight feet long, although some hammerheads could have been up to ten feet. The hammerheads are generally shy, although they will come close to check you out. The silky and Galapagos sharks are NOT shy, and the silkys are downright aggressive near the surface, especially if they catch you alone.

I had a very, very unpleasant encounter with two silky sharks when they found me doing a safety stop by myself in the open ocean. They kept circling and bumping me. They kept coming back no matter how hard I hit and kicked them. I have no doubt they would have had me for lunch if the encounter lasted much longer. Fortunately, I surfaced and the boat picked me up, but they the sharks hung around the boat for a long time after that. I still get upset when I think about it.

James you got more chance of being run down by a car crossing the road.That to be attacked by a shark while diving,most attacks on humans are by Bull sharks.And they only mistake humans for seals etc,after all you are in the sharks environment,the shark does not enter ours on land.
