Elaine, that must have been one helluva party... Welcome back

On another note entirely... we had a new-hire start work on Monday. I held the door open for her on her grand entrance. She's from Connecticut based on her out-of-state license plate. She attractive, seems very nice, of an appropriate age range, apparently enjoys talking with me and sure smiles a lot. I like that... hmmmm
Well, Pat, I sure hope we have better luck dragging details out of you than we do with Chip! We know nothing about privacy here in the coffee shop.

What will she be doing at work? Will you have much contact?

As much as I deem appropriate... She's doing technical writing in another office, my old one in fact. I was 'booted' out of the main engineering office a few months ago. At the time, I wasn't very happy about it. Now, down the road a bit, they've hired another 4 people and crammed them all into our old space. Actually, make that 5. Where there were 4, now there are John, Lisa, Dwayne, Corry, Gary, Larry, Rose, James and Kimberly. I understand the plotter is getting moved out and yet another person is forthcoming. They need to paint a serpentine white stripe just to navigate from one end to the other. I hope no-one has gastrointestinal problems or there's going to be trouble.

Despite my initial distaste with my new diggs (aka, refrigerator box out by the dumpster), it's starting to look good. At least I have my own space, albeit noisy and dirty. I'm located 'in the fray' out on the the shop floor in a small portable (7' x 7') with deadblow wielding welders banging on stuff all day long. The engineering department no longer engineers anything. They're all tied up doing technical drawings and documentation. I'm the only one handling production issues for a +$100 million a year business... I don't get it. If I take it "upstairs" and complain, the "fix" is usually worse than the problem so I've been silent. Regardless, my job is interesting (to say the least) and my workplace just got a bit more interesting as well...

Don't worry, I won't be evasive... If there's news, I'll report it... even if it's only worthy of page 23.

Addendum: There's no policy regarding dating at work. In fact, one of the new gals and another employee ended up getting married not too long ago. A workplace romance success story They seem happy and are both nice people... well actually, she's nice, he gets mixed reviews. I get along with him just fine.

Paul's night terrors were brutal. They lasted for at least a year when he was around 3 years old. He'd wake (but not actually be awake) screaming in terror believing things like......ants were crawling all over his body and his pyjamas and his bed. One night I will never forget....he had run screaming into the bathroom and was crouched against the wall beside the toilet. I was trying to get close to him to calm him, but he didn't recognize me and kept screaming that he wanted his mommy and he wanted to go home. I'm sure you can appreciate as a mother how that ripped my heart right out of me. This same kid also hallucinated like crazy every time he got a fever and that was almost as bad.

Matthew's seizures were diagnosed as something called "Complex Partial Seizures". He was old enough (early teens) that he was always able to explain them afterwards, and it was actually his ability to sketch what he was experiencing and seeing, that helped the specialist to diagnose him. Matthew would remain conscious, but saw things as if they in a long tunnel, or "hallway", he called it. He literally saw "cones and cylinders" racing by his head and said he could hear the 'whooshing sound' as they passed his ears. This was always accompanied by a feeling of absolute terror. He would come to my bedroom in the night. My door was always closed....and I would wake to the sound of him scratching his fingernail on the door. He would always tell me afterwards, that in HIS mind, he was pounding his fist so hard on the door he thought he would break it. Medication eventually helped, and after a few years he simply outgrew them. Thank God.

I fully understand. Our current nine year old, when she was two, would wake up after an hour or two, stand up, and dive from where she was sleeping. More than once I caught her from diving into a glass coffee table, the floor, or such. I had to sleep with her for three years before the habit just stopped. Many a sleepless night. One good thing is that we became very close and still are today.

I can really relate to a closeness that develops as a result of something like that. Andrew, the son with the anxiety disorder, was terrified to be alone at night. The anxiety was so severe that he started having brutal asthma attacks and it became so frightening for us that he ended up in our bed, night after night, as much for our own survival as his.

I understand, Nancy and Joe. Completely. You want to do anything and everything to protect your kids, but when the demons are inside THEM, how can you help? Nancy, the night terrors you describe sound horrible. When June had hers, she was screaming, clawing and grabbing at me, trying to protect herself from the apparition that I was. Eyes wide open. I just tried to hold her close until she finally relaxed and fell back to sleep. Just so tiny - but there was no doubt that's what was wrong with her.

Your description of the "complex partial seizures" gave me chills. I wonder if people can experience those in varying degrees, because my father in law and sister in law have experieces similar things, though Jack's weren't frightening. Karen's scared her, but she never could describe what was happening except to cry to her parents, "I'm seeing far away again." Jack even said he could bring on that state of "being in a hallway" just by concentrating a certain way.

Very mysterious, our minds.... hubby's home, I'd better run! More later....

If you check it out on the net, you'll find countless sites regarding this topic....and yes....there are varying degrees, varying symptoms etc. You're right...the mind is a mysterious thing.

I'm glad June only experienced the night terror once. My one granddaughter who is about 2 1/2 had only one, and it scared her parents to death. The 3 1/2 year old has had a few, but they seem to have ended.............however........THIS kid............well.........remember the Sixth Sense?

That's my all-time favorite movie! And you know... read the books from Allison Dubois, the "real medium" (from the tv-series)... It really isn't uncommon!

I couldn't guess how many times I've watched that movie, and I never get tired of seeing it. I need to buy my own copy! I'll check out those books, too! Thanks for the suggestion!

Nancy, everything I found on the subject describes it as a type of epilepsy. I guess epilepsy is a broad term.

How was your Val's day? I got a box of...... GODIVA. Chocolate mousse limited edition... had two for breakfast with my coffee!

Yep. Pictures on Monday. Totally different from her others as this one has no diamonds, has Arabic numbers, and has an oyster bracelet. It is a midsize and she likes the feel and weight of the watch when compared with a jub bracelet.

I will post pictures of her collection on Monday. Kids had a great day and my five and nine year olds were grinning from ear to ear all day. Must have been all of the candy. Seeing the mattress maggots smile makes my day.

I've heard yard apes, ankle-biters and rug rats, but mattress maggots is a first! Yes, it's fun to go through the bags of valentines from school... some of these little second graders are starting to get little crushes and such.... okay, it's cute now, but in a couple years....

The watch you describe sounds excellent - what kind of dial? All the features you describe fit into my "someday..." watch.

Walked into my daughters room, she is fourteen, around noon one day and she was still asleep; with god knows what on her bed. Clothes, books, ipods, food, makeup..the list goes on and on; all on top of her and I told my wife she looked like a maggot in a pile of poop. Thus the term "mattress maggot" was born. Here is a file photo of the watch and it has a slate dial. Bought the watch for the wife as a way of saying good job at work. I told her it was a Valentines gift because of the real circumstance surrounding why I purchased it for her. We had a hostile takeover attempt of our most profitable business last year and she has endured must stress and grief. Since she is an owner and CFO she was right in the middle of the battle. We eventually won, got the veredict yesterday of all days, but the stress on her was enormous. I don't mind the battles of life, but the wife is sane and is very sensitive to conflict. Funny how when money is involved people, that you thought you knew and trusted, can be blinded by greed.

If you let it; life can make us much better people.

Ah, yes - a familiar pic. You had posted it in another thread last week; now I remember. I love the clean look.

Sounds like your wife is very deserving - what a toll that must have taken on her. "That which does not kill us will make us stronger."

Juggling four kids, three companies, 100's of employees, running to the beer store to keep me in medicine, and on top of that dealing with an old man who is more trouble than the kids; yes.....she is a good wife. Why she married me I will never know. Or ask!

We don't do the Valentines Day thing. Al is one of those guys that frequently brings home little surprise things....flowers etc. for no reason at all, so that kind of covers it all. We dropped by my son's house to give the grandkids little Valentine gifts and cards which is always fun. They get so excited about stuff like that.

Amazing how the little twits get so exicted with something as simple as a Valentine card. My five year old just had to show me every card and explain every little sticker. Took about any hour and I loved every minute of it. Hey, how come you have grandkids and this old man still has a five year old. Guess you guys way up north are just smarter than this old southern boy. You and Al have a good weekend, eh.

Nahh...just older, Joe. I'm 61 so I've earned the right to have the grandkids! Thanks for the good weekend wishes. Tonight will be special for us. ggbrown (member here)....Grant... is the oldest son. He's visiting from Winnipeg for the weekend and staying with his brother Paul and his wife. We're going there tonight to babysit their daughter so they can go to a wedding, and Al, Grant and I are going to have some quality one-one time together. Bet you can't guess what the major topic of discussion will be! Hope you and your sweetie have a great weekend as well.

In the past two weeks, two of my friends have had their husbands move out. One gal had been married about 15 years, the other for 8. Four kids between them - ages 2 to 10.

With a divorce rate of 50 percent, and so many unhappy married couples out there, are there really that many stong, contented marriages? I can't think of very many among the people I know.
