Bezel design: domed vs fluted, which is preferred?

Personally, I like the "newer" domed models (on the datejust and milgauss, for example). Now I may be wrong, they may merely be a re-introduced retro look, but regardless, I like it. But it seems that Rolex has been using fluted bezels for quite a few years, even if you look at vintage models back to the '60's, the majority that I have seen seem to all be fluted.

1. Has Rolex manufactured domed bezels before recently?
2. Which do you personally prefer? Domed or Fluted? Just curious.

The domed bezel was introduced on the DD in 2000, together with other changes of the DD: SOLID centre links (they looked solid before, but in fact weren't) and a slightly domed crystal. Later, the new clasp style of the DD came.

Personally, I'd prefer the polished "sharp" bezel to the domed one. But that's just my personal preference.

But my favourite will always be the fluted bezel.

Bo, so there is a flat bezel and a domed bezel in addition to the fluted one? I had one AD tell me "flat" and "domed" were one in the same but I think they are indeed two different things.

I think the flat bezel is the style found on older DJ's like mine. The domed style is found on the newer style DJ's and DD's. Hope that's right.

i defiantly don't like the domed bezel. it looks plain and drab to me. the fluted bezel glitters when the light reflects across it and just says rolex!!

@ jj

those are some killer shots of platty! you keep that up and i will have to buy one for myself, my wife already wants one. lol

I much prefer the domed (JJ's head) bezel. Fluted looks too busy for my liking.

I think it depends on what you're buying it for.

If I were buying only one watch, and wanted a completely understated, classic Rolex for casual or dress--SS DJ with domed bezel on oyster would be perfect.

However, if you want the quintessential Rolex DJ to wear as a dress watch, it has to be fluted bezel and jubillee.

Also, as a general rule, I think fluted goes with jubillee, and domed goes better with oyster. My opinion.

Yes, you are right, Dan. As stated, the domed bezel came with the new DD style in 2000.

Nice DJ example of a "sharp" (flat) polished bezel, btw., Dan.

Here are comparison pics of the two bezel styles (sources are on the pics. Last one has no source but is from my photobucket):

I prefer the fluted with the Jubilee and domed with the Oyster bracelet. However, I tried on a platinum Day/Date with domed bezel and it was classic.
