Engraving a Rolex?

Hey Guys,

What are your thoughts on engraving a Rolex Submariner? I presume they would do it on the back or maybe the Clasp?

Would you engrave yours and what would you have it say?

My Daytona is engraved on the back with my wedding date as it was a wedding present from my wonderful wife.

i like inscriptions, ive looked at a few older watches with inscriptions , so much history , and very personal , but not everyone agrees , so if its going to be sold , it may hurt the resale.

My wife and I considered doing it when we purchased new watches for our 50th birthday. Ultimately we didn't but I like the idea but only if you plan to keep the watch.

I have a few that are engraved to commemorate special events. But I am passing my collection on to my sons. As DD says above, it does potentially hurt resale value.

I say inscribe away, if you like. The back can always be replaced if you are on the fence about resale. I hope this helps?

My wife bought mine for me on my return from Afghanistan. It is engraved with a portion of a quote from Mark Twain. My favourite quote. So the watch has much sentimental value to me. I don't intend to sell the watch and hope that it's passed down for many years anyway.

I guess if you bought it for yourself for no special reason leave it naked. You may want to flip it anyway. But if it's a special purchase, go for it.

unfortunetly the back cannot always be replaced 40 years later with one that will maintain the originality of the watch and value.

It is up to the individual imho, it is bad for resale, but if you like it and go for it, it is your watch and if you have no intention of selling and handing it down, why not ? i would suggest engraving on the case back and not too deep as this can be removed if necesary.

I would do it and buy a new caseback and keep it with the box and papers, if ever a time comes to sell, just swap the caseback out, this way no loss of resale value and you get to keep the engraved caseback.

I think if you're getting a watch engraved, resale isn't the first concern. Think about it, guys.

If it is to commentate a special even such as a birthday gift or wedding I would not have a problem with it as both the watch and the date are special so.

If it is just to put a name or something like that on it I would not bother with it since at some point they/you might want to sell/trade the watch.

Exactly. If I get a watch engraved, I sure hope I don't ever have to sell it. But engravings can be polished off, if it ever came down to it.

When we had it serviced (for the very first time) a year ago, the AD suggested that we have the watch engraved with her dad's name and her name underneath his. When this watch eventually goes to my oldest daughter, her name will be engraved underneath my wife's. Pretty cool to have a family tree on the back of a watch...

My parents still have a wall clock that was passed down I think 6 generations or so. All with the names engraved.
My farther in law passed away last year and we're planing on doing the same with his Pepsi GMT. A Rolex is really one of those Sentimental high points of life.

I like the idea of engraving.. I would do it to commemorate a special occasion or milestone in my life.

It would be hard to engrave anything on the clasp. The clasp is curved even at its slightest angle. I engraved the back of my DSSD. I was inspired to do so after watch Unknown with Liam Neeson. Saw the engraving on the back of "his" DSSD, and immediately had to have mine engraved. I engraved mine on the case back, which is where it is most appropriate to do so.

If the day comes that you want to sell or trade, you can put it back to stock with the new caseback and keep the inscription as a keepsake
