It says a lot about you that you are concerned. I believe people at work will get to know and like you for who you really are. Some will unfairly comment about you regardless but I say wear and enjoy...they'll see u fir who u really are over time.

It can be dangerous sometimes, but I insist in using at least an excellent watch.
Otherwise, life is not so funny....

I work in NY at a finl firm. The watch range is huge from a timex all the way to complicated PP's. I find they do get noticed if you go too far. Made that mistake but watches are a passion and I have to be true to myself. I kill myself and should reap some of the rewards. I draw the line at my 5970...that will never make it to the office but my annual calendar Nautiluses do. My best advice would be to choose one that you really love and just break in that way. Over time you can rotate more. You would be surprised what people notice and I understand your sensitivity and it's not misplaced. It can impact you later...as silly and petty as that sounds it's also true. Good luck.

As others have said, depends a lot on the culture of your workplace. Though in my experience, more often than not, unless you're wearing a gold YMII - no one will notice.

I think it's funny because when I worked in PE I could wear anything into the office as that was the "culture" and almost a requirement in the sense that investors wanted to see success-- similar to being a trader or in IB.

One of my good friends, a lawyer at a "white shoe" firm could not drive her Aston to work, could not wear any watch over 5k or do anything that would "upstage a partner". It was quite funny given the fact that her fiancé has a few Ferrari's and a good watch collection. Edited: Her fiancé ended up having to buy her an M3 so that she could fly under the radar.

My personal opinion is it is all in how you compose yourself and if you are among peers. If you are not flashy and act normal I see nothing wrong with it. At a previous job the cup of tea was fakes from when coworkers and I went to china on business. They never understood why I'd spend thousands on something that could be had for $100 and look the same. I never showed it off or anything they just didn't understand. I took the opportunity to point out that a watch to me was the equivalent to jewelry for my wife. They seemed to get it at that point.

I did once have a couple of coworkers ask how I could afford them as we were all under payed but they figured I made more then them. It was a simple matter of explaining to them that a firm understanding of my family finances, a low debt/income ratio resulted in the ability to purchase items with the extra discretionary income. It actually worked to my benefit as I helped some guys establish budgets to get themselves out of debt to live more comfortable lives.

The only time I would wear my g-shock was when I did things with Habitat for Humanity or my church's handyman team. In those cases it was about being appropriate for the environment in which a g-Shock was more fitting then a more expensive watch.

An Explorer I or an Oyster Perpetual under a dress shirt can be discreet, but I'd save the rose gold Skydweller or the YMII for weekend wear.
Well said.

Maybe you have not been to SP, however, most people take armored cars around as it has a high rate of kidnap etc.

I seriously doubt 50.1% of the 20 million residents there travel in armored cars... Crime in Brazil is blown way out of proportion here in the U.S.

Besides I was more commenting on all your OT posts how obnoxious they look ("according the Rap report", "taking armored cars", "hubby got mad that I want to start an art collection", "if you're not buying an exotic, go Porsche or Rover"... And the ever classic "when I worked in PE".)

I mean, really?!?

Well, you're not very informed about SP then. Yes, I would agree that 50.1% of the residents in SP do not take armored cars. However, my husband was there on business and the other company felt it was imperative that he/we travel in armored cars as contrary to what you may believe, SP is a relatively "dangerous" place to travel as a business executive. I will say that I really do enjoy the city though. (for your reference http://www.talglobal.com/sao-paulo-a...-these-cities/)

Funny that you think my posts are "OTT" when I am not the person posting my entire watch collection, car collection, etc. I made a joke in re: to wanting to start collecting art as I think that fine art can be appreciated in a way that some fine watches can be appreciated. I like things of beauty and I am fascinated by certain painters.

I'm sorry that you're upset that I think that if someone isn't buying exotic that they should go Porsche or RR-- I guess we're all entitled to our own opinions. As someone who loves cars far more than I love watches, I was merely stating my preferences.

As far as your thinking my referencing the Rap report as "OTT", I am quite confused-- as I understand it, this site is about high end watches and one would think that it would be okay to post diamond prices without being flamed for it? It isn't as though prices of things are not discussed on this site all the time. I was merely correcting an incorrect statement re: diamond prices (according to the Rap Report which is the universal diamond pricing guide)

Lastly, not sure how saying, "when I worked in PE" is at all offensive? I don't think that working in PE would offend anyone? If I recall correctly, there is a thread here asking people what their respective professions are and which watches they own. I chose not to participate in that thread as I felt it was an "awkward" thread.

FYI: SP is one of the largest consumers of armored vehicles in the world and in many cases, the middle class buys and uses these vehicles.
Here is an old article (2009), but it will give you an idea of why armored cars are wanted and in many cases, needed: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/04/wo...anted=all&_r=0

If you have a bit more means ($$$) in Brazilians cities, not only São Paulo, you will have an armored car. You may think her comments as obnoxious, some others might not. Is it obnoxious people displaying their watches and other luxury items here? Some may think so, then they should not be around, really.

Growing up in a low income family with friends and coworkers in the same situation, I know things like "Rolexes" rub some people the wrong way, right or wrong, it's a fact... and I'm very cognizant of that where ever I go.

With that being said, I do wear my Rolex daily to the office, but I keep it under my sleeve and avoid drawing attention to it. I enjoy it on my wrist throughout the day, and see no need for others to know it's there.

If the people you work with make decent livings, drive nice cars and live in nice homes/neighborhoods, I don't think there is much to be concerned with.
Have to agree a Rolex watch is bought to wear that's what its for, its just a watch much like ant other watch, meant to tell the time nothing more.Just cannot see why subjects like this are brought up on forum mostly every day subject closed and now beaten to death.
