Hi guys! I found the watch below at a local venue and think it is looking pretty good (I've only seen it on-line so far). The watch is described as a Rolex Oyster Precision, manual wind, 36 mm, original crown, 50's. As of now no serial number or anything else. The price equals app. 1 kUSD.

What do you guys think? Anyone with information on the model, collectability, condition based on the single picture, et cetera? My trigger finger is twitching badly (thank you TRF

) but I would like to know some more before going at it. Any feedback would be much appreciated!

Buy that!!!!!! I've seen early datejusts with gilt ovettone dials sell for $15k+ this is a gorgeous dial at a great price. I don't think you'd have a problem getting $1500 if you went to flip it right after you bought it. Gold lettering, step dial, honeycomb dial, it's a classy vintage that's a vintage midsize gem

Very classy indeed. Sometimes the really old ones can look old fashioned, but that one looks clean and contemporary.

I'm guessing mid to late 50's based on similar dials I've seen

It's 34mm like Mon said. I don't believe they made 36mm oyster precisions until the late 60s/early70's and even then very few were made, most were 34mm

Thanks! I will go and have a look and a measure tomorrow. Should I measure the diameter from the end to end of the dial or should I also include the "steel ring" around the dial? Just guessing that the steel ring might count for the extra 2 mm (34 to the 36 that they state).

34mm is the case width. Measure the width across
The center without measuring the crown

Ref. 6424 is 36mm. Mine is from 1964. Also doesn't have lug holes.

It is now mine! Having been away for a week I was today able to close a deal! It was perhaps a bit stupid of me to show the watch on TRF before it was firmly bought, as it was sold on auction and as the seller mid-way into the auction suddenly displayed the ref and serial number which caught a lot of attention localy. So, IT DID NOT COME CHEAP, but it is now mine!

It is indeed 36 mm, a ref 6024, serial 866 XXX (1952) as all 6024's are. 6024's are apparantly rare as the model was only manufactured in a run of 1 000 during 1 year (some sources say 1 day but I am sceptic). They come in a variety of dials. The main difference vs ordinary models of that time is the 36 mm oversized case. I will post a few more pictures as soon as I get my hardware working (within shortly). Feeling poor but very happy!

Thanks!! A few more pic's enclosed. I will put my macro skills to a test after I've fetched it on Monday or Tuesday. It has lugholes on one side only (the off-crown side) and a Rolex "clasp" (the strap is an old non-Rolex - I will find something more fun).

Most likely originally had a Super Oyster crown, but many of these were converted to screw down crowns in the early-mid '50s. I am jealous, this is such a beautiful, rare watch.

Yes, I've also understood that it had a Super Oyster crown originally. Do you think it could be re-converted? I've seen a few around and would absolutely consider it.

It would be more trouble than you think. It's not just the crown; and the parts are not that easy to find. It looks fine the way it is!
