Grey dials on 1680's
It seems from a lots of pics online that the mid 70's dials on the 1680's turn greyish. Is this common?
Why don't other dials have this same characteristic? Thanks! |

I've seen 'greyish' dials on 5512, 5513, 1655, 1665 and probably others. I don't think you could say it was 1680 only. Hard to generalise, really, but it's down to a multitude of factors, I'd think; dial manufacturer (they used a few); the paint mix that was used at any given time and how it was applied etc.; the conditions in which it was made, and subsequent life of the watch. These are all things that would affect the outcome, to a degree. JMHO.

I noticed that slight grey effect on my 1675. I thought it can appear with all the matte dials due to sunlight, but i don't know the reason for sure.

My 5512 (3 mil.) has that same grayish look on the dial in certain light. I just assume it's fade from time and the sun. It's part of what makes vintage Rolexes so beautiful. Each one becomes unique over the years.

Awesome pics... any others with greyish dials, even 5513's, 5512's, etc.?
Would an extreme fade be considered tropical? |

insert is gray...
The gray insert makes the dial look grey...
