Stolen Rolexes

Hey all..

I am not sure if this would work, so I thought I would submit a suggestion for those of us who have been victimized by theft, or have lost their rolexes. During 1996, I had my SS Submariner stolen from my car in a gym parking lot in Southern California. I reported the theft to the appropriate authorities, which included the serial number of the watch.

I know this is a tight knit community and was wondering if there was a thread we could implement for those of us who have been victims of thefts/robberies. Based on very critical observation of Ebay with false and fraudulent Rolex watches, I figure we could pool our resources here. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The best thing you could do is report the serial number of your theft to Rolex. If that serial number watch is ever handed into Rolex for service you will be notified.

Fortunately I had the watch insured, and i replaced it immediately with another SS Submariner. Now, thanks to this forum, I am lusting after a Daytona (Black or White)!!!

But I understand that if you report to Rolex SG, only if it was handed over in the SG service centre would it ever get picked up. If it was stolen in SG and exported to Australia, the records will not keep up and as a result would be serviced as if it was original owner

Thanks Seiko. There is a national data base here in the states that is maintained by law enforcement. Anytime something is stolen and the victim knows the serial numbers of the item, they are entered into the data base.

However, I know chances are very slim that I will ever see that watch again. Just a very unfortunate set of circumstances.

The data base National Criminal Information Center (NCIC) will allow a reporting agency to enter items such as watches into the data base. This data will stay in the NCIC for the remainder of the calendar year in which it was entered plus one year. You can ask the agency that took the report of the theft for the NCIC number of your watch entry, this might encourage it to be entered if it has not been, sometimes it is not. Some jurisdictions keep track of stolen items for longer periods in their own system.

Retained in the database for one year. For a Rolex that seems to short. I understand data cannot be retained for a long time - the database would be beyound enormous.

Modern computers can store enormous amounts of data so why do they only keep it for a year

My Rolex Submariner was stolen from my home here in Geneva, Switzerland. I asked in Bucherer (where I bought it) if a register was held of stolen Rolex watches and was told in no uncertain terms nothing of the sort existed.

Not necessarily. By paying a settlement, the insurance company essentially owns the watch. They may choose to offer it to you for the value of the settlement, or a lesser amount if it has been damaged or had its value reduced in some way. Depends on a lot of factors, but you are not obligated to return the settlement.

Funny I was in Geneva years ago and remember looking at Rolexes in the Bucherer window. The same store? I remember seeing Rolex, Tudor and Bucherer watches. I was thinking of trading my Rolex for another Rolex then, and wish I had.

I also vaguely recall seeing mention somewhere of a serial number record of stolen Rolexes. Anyone interested should try googling it, or getting in touch with Rolex.

My 2003 Rolex stainless steel Submariner serial number Y92745116610 was stolen on 5/20/2023 in San Diego, California. Putting it on the web in hopes someone googles the serial number and sees this post if sale is attempted. Police report filed. I have all original papers for the watch to prove ownership. With every single stolen report to Rolex RSC or any other database it NEEDS to be accompanied by an official police report.

Without such checks and balances in place - whats stopping some idiot on the internet finding a picture of a watch where a serial is visible and reporting it stolen?

You cant have unregulated stolen databases. It is illegal.

If your watch is stolen, you can start a new thread here with the words "stolen Rolex and the serial number" in the title. An exact Google search will bring up the thread. So, any dealer searching the serial number online will find your information if they search "stolen Rolex serial number." I just did it on an old thread here and it works. One first time poster recently just did just this with no further comments beyond the first post just to get the info available for an online search for honest dealers and buyers.

Posting the number is a good start. Keep doing that on all the watch forums.
Perhaps contact Rolex to register the theft. They probably need a copy of the police report.

Tony - I strongly urge you to begin a new thread today. This is for 2 reasons:

First, this is an old thread that has multiple different watches mentioned, has wrong info in it due to its age, and it doesn’t begin with post #1 having the key point of your stolen Rolex.

Second, your serial number information is not correctly formatted. I believe you appended the model number into the serial number. If I subtract model 16610 from Y92745116610, I get Y927451. Maybe take a closer look at your paperwork?

The best way to get good Google results is to have a simple set of information for their web indexing algorithm and to have repeated references to the serial number in multiple replies by the members here.

May I suggest something like this?
“Stolen Rolex Submariner serial number Y927451 on May 20, 2023 in San Diego, California.

My model 16610 Submariner Date was purchased in 2003 and the theft has been reported to the police as well as Rolex. Please contact me through TRF.”

Oh - and do get a copy of your police report and contact Rolex USA on Monday. They will hold the Watch if it is submitted for service, and it IS on a global database so you can get your watch back no matter where it lands at an RSC
