Hi everyone, I'm a 74 year old man about to indulge my self and purchase a Rolex, however I can not afford the 12K for a new one so am looking at pre owned, any suggestions as to reputable suppliers is greatly appreciated.

Hi friend and welcome. There are lots of people out there who will be happy to re home a pre-loved watch for reasonable prices. Personally rather than go to a grey dealer, i would hit the sales part of the forum here. You are likely to get a reputable watch from a good guy, who knows his stuff. Theres plently to choose from, and you will be likely to know everything about the watch.

In light of your comment though, i have just flipped my SS GMT II for GMT IIc from an AD (authorised Dealer) and i only paid $7700 for it!!

Depending on what kind of watch you want changes the price, obviously, but there are many new watches out there for much less than 12grand!

I would highly recomend the GMT II its my favourite watch, though you could go with a sub, i think for a gentleman like yourself, a GMT would be fine, and fit in at a lowly $6600 ish BNIB (brand new in Box) from your AD.

As for your question, ALL of my Rollies were purchased pre-owned from eBay. You should learn all you can about the Rolex brand first, and then look either online at eBay, other direct online sellers, like Alan Furman, or go to brick-and-mortar Rolex dealers that might have some pre-owned watches in stock.

Best of luck in your search. I waited a long time myself (56) before I finally purchased my first Rolex.

What kind of Rolex do you have your eyes on Bob? A sports model, like a Submariner/GMT/SeaDweller, or one of the more formal Datejusts/Milgauss types? Also do you have a preference for material ie stainless steel, gold, etc?

You say 12k, but there are many brand new Rolex for half that at any Dealer....

and most used Rolex watches are in the 2 to 4k range, depending on what you want...

Welcome, as Steve said, you should not have to spend anywhere near 12k. You could get a nice two tone datejust or maybe you would prefer a sports model, best thing to do, is go into a store a try a few on

As for buying pre-owned, it can be done, just be careful and find a good seller.

I would go to a Rolex dealer in your city. They can guide you and you can trust them far more than a seller off of the internet. They should also have a good, varied selection.

Bob, I got my first one at 49. The second best thing to looking for your new Rolex is actually getting your new Rolex. Please have fun with your quest and keep us up to date. AD's are great if you don't want any worries, but you can do well with a grey dealer or someone here on the forum. Hope you get what you want soon.

Welcome Bob. My advice is to go to an AD and ask 10% off and not taxes for a brand new Rolex. A brand new Rolex is something you will feel proud and you can pass to your kids. A GMT II C would be great and it costs close to $7000. You can save a couple thousand dollars if you buy preowned. Let us know what you buy. I will love to see what a gent like you buy.

With the dollar dropping and the Euro at record highs I went with the used
Rolex route from a dealer I have bought watches from in the past in AZ.
I got a WG DJ with all papers and box for 3300 about 1/2 of what a new one would cost.
I just sent it to have it serviced and cleaned up a bit at the RSC in Dallas.
With everything increasing and income stays the same its hard to part with 7-10k+
for a watch. I may sell off all my Omegas and Breitlings to purchase a Sub to have
a dress DJ and SuB for everyday.

Rolex Bob go for a gmt2 u won't be disappointed, msrp is 7k, but go for a 20 percent discount on it. And bargain. I at first thought I would get a submariner, but realized there is just one too many, gmt2 is a classic for me.
