Should I flip/sell my GMT2c?

A Rolex is worth the price a used car, yet is a very small object and... A quite useless one (my phone tells time). For some of us it took lots of time, efforts and hard work to buy one, especially the first one. So it can be valued because of this. It can be some kind of financial achievement.

Others wonder if they should buy a YG or WG Daytona for their graduation... They might not put the same value into it...

I would flip.. But I'm not that sentimental of a person. That said I do "miss" the ones I e sold from time to time but never regret it!

Thanks for the responses everyone. I think I'll hold onto it for the time being. I don't need the money, I was just thinking the money could do more for me invested. But in the end, it was my first Rolex, a mile stone in life because I worked so hard to be able to afford it. It's sentimental because of all the hard work behind it. And one day if I decide on a daytona or whatever else Rolex may throw at us at baselworld, I can flip it and still look at the new piece and see some of the first in it.

Maybe I'll fall in love with it again. Wish I never got the 16710 and pepsi insert lol.....Okay okay, no "send me the pepsi then" posts lol...will never happen

It is a great watch, but then again, there is no way any of us can own every great watch. And even if we could, how could they all fit into the rotation?

I'm a generally tight person financially.

I recently bought my first Rolex, a 36mm Explorer and enjoy it every day.

There will come a time when I can afford that steel GMT Pepsi or a YG Daytona.

There would be no regrets if I had to flip it to help finance another purchase...

Only reservation would be if it were a gift or and inheritance

I've got just about zero attachment to any watch. Or any material object for that matter.

But I'm quite attached to money.

If I wanted a new watch, I've got no problems flipping something I don't wear in order to fund it.

Nope, still don't get it. Don't think I'm the only one either... It's a watch. Just a watch. JUST a watch. You can keep yours forever and ever and ever, and that's more than fine. My 1st Rolex is long gone, and I have no regrets or remorse.

You speak of taking lots of time, effort and hard work to purchase one, which I'm sure is/was the case for a lot of US. Not everyone can afford to just buy another Rolex because they want one without trading in/up.

Now, with that in mind, if someone would like to upgrade their watch, or say their taste changes and wants a different style, you feel they should just keep it? Keep a watch that they don't really care for anymore just because it was their FIRST one? Keep that watch instead of rolling it into something that someone would PREFER to have? Oh ok, now it makes sense...

I'm not gonna lie. As much as I love watches and cars, I much prefer to see those little figures when I log into my bank account.

I'm ok spending. Clearly. But when push comes to shove, I always prefer to offset it with moving something of value. It reduces the financial hit.

And as frivolous and stupid as I've sometimes been, I tend to be mostly conservative. I always save first.

So sometimes that means making the flip.

No that's not what I am saying if someone wants to change, let him change. I wouldn't but again this is a personal thing. I am only trying to explain why one would not change which you seem not to understand.

But again English is not my mother tongue at all... Maybe I am explaining it the wrong way.

Yeah I would go with the Daytona if that's the watch you've been looking at. No reason to keep it just because it's your first Rolex. You should enjoy it and if that's something that you're not getting from it right now then flip it and get something you want to wear.

My first watch was a panerai. I barley wear it now. I still have it becusse I want to build up my collection and I want some diversity but probably someday I'll want something else and realize I haven't worn my PAM in over a year and I'll have no problem flipping it for something I want to wear.

the GMTiic was my first as well! I've actually been tempted to sell it to get a BLNR. but alas i never could. i think ill just wear it until i can buy a BLNR as well and keep the GMTiic as a "first watch" heirloom

Depends how attached you were to it.
My first Rolex was a BLNR, I still love it very much, and it has been a part of me for a while.
If some day it doesn't get much wrist time because of another pick up, I wouldn't sell it solely because of sentimental value.
I would sell any other though, just not the BLNR.
If you weren't too attached anyway, then sure go and sell it. Rather get something that will get wrist time!

Well, we both agree that of someone wants to change, there's nothing wrong with that.

What I don't agree with, is that some ppl think they SHOULD keep it just because it's their first Rolex. That's all I don't agree with, but to each their own for sure! Some ppl can afford to keep it while adding another, and some ppl need to trade it in or sell it. If they need to do the latter, they shouldn't feel obligated to keep it, as it's just a watch.

Based on what is written above and assuming you are a person of great sentiment, I would hang on to the LN.

For me, my first Rolex will always have a special place in my heart and I would not part with it, regardless if it sees very little wrist time or not.

Sell it, someone will wear it and enjoy it. As far as what to do with the money, Daytona sounds like a good option. Or save it for a future purchase.
