G'day Guys,

I need some advice please? I have just aquired a Rolex that is marked as a Precision Cosmograph. The serial number is 464XXXX (not sure if I should put the entire number?) I had my watchmaker open the case-back and it has a genuine signed Rolex 17 jewel manual wind movement.

It has two sub-dials and the date at the 6 o'clock mark. It runs beautifully and the flyback function is perfect. It is gold with a gold dial and black registers. I am not familiar with this model at all?

The problem I have is that the model number is 1601, which is for a datejust if I am not mistaken? Please have a look at photos I have just added http://www.daz.com.au/cosmograph.html

The pics are huge when you open the thumbnails so you can see detail, so be patient as they load.

Any info is appreciated? I want to make sure of what I have before I throw it on eBay or elsewhere for sale.

I think you need to maybe take your watch to Rolex to get it checked out...........I haven't seen one like that before.

I can not say for sure but it isn't a 1601 Datejust.

Never seen that example before.

It's either extremely rare or a fake.

A Cosmograph with a date at six is a rare animal these days.

This watch was a special order by an African Bamboula king, when the Rolex representative delivered the watch, he (the rep) looked like an old school mate of the king, who in the past and while at boarding school in Switzerland he bullied the king as a boy, god knows what else was going on in these boarding schools.
Anyway he par boiled the rep as if he was some shoulder cut of beef and eat him, in the mean time the watch was lost and apparently it surfaced in Australia (which is really right next door to Africa some say part of it at one time), and you have found it, possibly priceless with all the meaning of the word.

I mean no disrespect to Anastasios, and if you have any further information with supporting pictures Tasos, that will be great.

But I will go out on my own here and say that this watch is a COMPLETE fake!

Firstly, the movement is completely wrong.
Case is completely wrong.
Caseback is completely wrong.
Crown is completely wrong.
Pushers are completely wrong.
Dial is completely wrong.
Model 1601 is completely wrong.

I hope you can get you money back on this. I honestly think it a fake.

You may also wish to post on VRF (Vintage Rolex Forum), but I'm sure Mike and Padi (here) will agree with me.

I hope TempoKing is right. I do recall seeing one ONLY of these before listed for sale, but I cannot remember where? But I am not sure if it was exactly the same? I have asked advice from a few Rolex dealers from Aus and the US via email and I am awaiting a reply.

The story of how I acquired the watch is from a fellow Aussie. He said that he got it from a back street flea market watch dealer in Saigon in 2003 in used condition. He had it for a couple of years and then it stopped, so he put it into Rolex Melbourne for repairs. He got it back and has had it since until I recently bought it. Lets just say that the price I paid was for less than you would pay for a cheap leather band alone!

As far as it possibly being a fake, I don' see it when you think about it? Who would go to the trouble of making a VERY high quality (which it is) fake one off watch? We all know that the fakes are based on the popular models and pumped out in large volumes.

So who would make a one ONLY replica of this? Has anyone ever seen a replica like this? I know I haven't, they are always the Sub, Daytona and so on. So it doesn't make much sense when you think about it in that respect? If it was a cheap and nasty quality than yes I would say ok. But it is not, it is actually a very solid well built high quality watch and the weight is 60 grams. Which is not bad for a watch this size without a band/bracelet.

Any thoughts on these comments?

It is highly unlikely that Rolex would have touched a fake. Do you have the service papers?

No, I only have the watch. As for the earlier comment about the gold flaking. It is not flaking it is just the photos pick up every little detail and highlight it. The watch is actually in very good cosmetic condition, for what seems to be an old watch. It has a couple of nicks out of the back of the case and it is still gold right through. So I doubt they would use solid gold on a copy?

Thanks mate, it was a good story! I am still not convinced that it is a copy though. I don't believe that anyone would go to so much trouble of a high quality watch like this and make it solid gold?

The problem with taking it to a Rolex dealer for authenticity is the distance. I am in a rural area of NSW Australia and it's 6 or 7 hours to Sydney or Victoria. I will wait for a reply from dealers I have emailed and get their thoughts? I might end up throwing it on thiefbay and let the bidders decide.

Mail it to the RSC. Nothing else is concrete...and I would NOT put it up on eBay.

I don't want it as it's not my kind of watch. I like bigger watches. Have a look at my custom made Swiss 7750 in the Watch Gallery (non Rolex) section. That is my favourite watch and then my Omega Seamaster chronograph. Then my sub 16610 is third in line...
