How do you tell a real vintage buckle from a fake ?

Hi all,
I've recently purchased a big bubbleback, without an original band and buckle. It is form 1954 according to the serial number.
Looking on ebay at a number of 14k gold filled and solid gold buckles.
How the heck do you tell which is the genuine article and which is a fake ?
Some have nothing on the back, others have ROLEX in different scripts and one actually has an Edinburgh ( Scotland ) hallmark.
If there is a link somewhare, or if members here can advise on what is genuine and correct I'd sure prefer not to make a mistake. I'm sure there are others out there who would also appreciate some insight.
Thanks in advance.

cheers
richard
