You lucked out on that bottle...trust me, alot of corks would have failed at 30 years. Stags Leap Winery itself would probably like to know how its 1986 Cab is tasting, and how it's held up over such time. Wineries love keeping track of these things. You should shoot em an email and share the good news. Congrats

Delicious. One of the things I love about OR Pinots is the acidity that can cut through fatty foods like steak - and in this case gravy and garlic mashed potatoes. It was a great pairing.

Ferrari-Carano Merlot 2012~ Merlot from Sonoma County, California

I would recommend it... I prefer Cabs, this one is not as lite as other Merlots and the little Lady likes her Merlots and Red Blends.


Winemaker's Notes

Select lots of grapes are chosen from our vineyards in Sonoma County to create this beautifully-balanced and full-bodied Ferrari-Carano Merlot. This is a velvety wine with a complex nose of fresh-picked blackberries, black tea, cedar, red cherry and licorice. A fleshy and generous mouthfeel is followed by notes of bittersweet cinnamon, mocha and tobacco. This wine has full, generous tannins that coat the palate, impressive length and lasting acidity.

We have a very similar decanter and the aerator fits right in the neck and has a screen filter to catch the sediment. Seems to make a difference to me.

Opened this little gem last night - a '13 Venge Sangiovese --- from a great vineyard that makes some PHENOMENAL wines that we really enjoy --

Kirk Venge is an AMAZING wine maker.

This is one that you can open any day of the week -- at ~$30ish / bottle it has great concentration, just enough boldness and great fruit (not to be a cab)...I definitely recommend trying.

It packs a GREAT value to its structure, flavor profile for being a young wine.

They make some great wine--- I definitely agree!!!

We went to the winery last year when we visited Napa.

They also make a REALLY awesome Syrah - if you like that varietal.

As I'm sure you know, 2007 was an exceptional year for Northern Italian wines and this is a superior producer. Personally I think this wine has another 10 years before it's even ready to be opened possibly more. It will be tremendous for years to come. Unfortunately my budget for age worthy wines has been blown this year with all the great vintages there are are available both in the US and abroad. There have been some fantastic vintages that are plugging up my storing capabilities and I'm busting at the seams

Finishing off a bottle of prisoner tonight so I picked up half a case of the C&C to compare. Thanks!

Gave the Mrs a blind taste test. She knew which was prisoner but called it basically even. Going back for a couple cases tomorrow. Thanks for the recommendation Leon!

Not sure if I have posted this one before... Decent Merlot in the $24 - $54 bottle range. Perhaps it would be better with some age.

Winemaker Notes
With its temperate weather and lengthy hang time, the 2012 growing season was ideal for our style of Merlot, yielding a wine that combines exceptional structure and depth with velvety tannins and alluring fruit. From its aromas of Santa Rosa plum, crème de cassis, violet and Herbes de Provence to its enticing flavors of olallieberry, sticky toffee and vanilla bean, this is a complex and compelling expression of Napa Valley Merlot.
Production
The 2012 growing season offered near-perfect growing conditions. Though budbreak was late due to heavy spring rains, warm weather during bloom allowed the vines to set a large crop. Increased yields were the result of more berries, not larger berries. This translated into even higher quality in the winery, as the skin-to-juice ratio remained ideal. Slightly cooler-than-average post-veraison weather and a lack of any heat events allowed for greatly extended hang time.
