$50 to remove a link!?
I'm traveling for work and stopped by a local AD, hoping to have a link removed from the bracelet. They said it would be $50 since I did not purchase the watch there. Sounded ridiculous to me since no one was in the store and it would have taken 5 minutes. I get that time is not free - but $50? Needless to say, I walked out.
I work a few blocks from RSC NY. Will they do that for free or a nominal fee? |

$20 screw driver and you can adjust it yourself, only way to ensure its done right. At least that's been my expirence with jewelry stores. But I would think RSC would do it for free.

My AD adjusted the Rolexes I did not buy from them. They did it even before I bought my first Rolex from them. Looks like those people didn't want future business from you. It blows my mind how my fellow sales people in this world can be so stupid with possible prospects. They should've not only done it for free but offered to show you any piece they had and given you a cup of coffee if you wanted.

Clearly they don't want the business, that's fine, move on like you did. Each AD is different and they can charge what they want. Doesn't mean you have to pay it, you did the right thing. It is an easy DIY task but if you rather have a professional do it find a local watchmaker and ask the rate before hand.

Out of curiosity, why did you need to have a link removed while travelling?
As for the fee, I'm not sure what I'd expect to pay, but I definately wouldn't expect it for free. |

Pretty typical. I travel with a couple of screwdrivers. You never know when you may buy something.

Also, would you work for free 5 minutes a day??? Do the maths over 365 days how many hours that is and what would be the loss of earnings over that period. |

$50 compared to the price of your watch is negligible. Could they have done it for free showing good customer service, yes. And you can leave as you did which is fine.

$50 is a rip!! $5 is fine. $10 is pushing it. $50 is ridiculous... and the only way a link takes more than a few seconds to remove is if the screw has been glued, rusted, etc.

If the employee is at work during business hours, it makes no difference if they are sitting down staring at the wall or helping a potential customer. The owner is still paying them either way. I personally would do it for free to build relationships with new potential clients. Hopefully the OP found another AD to adjust the bracelet for less / free... |

That sounds a little on the high side. Good move on your part walking away...if they're that careless on pricing, their work may be suspect as well.

Last year I worked over 280 hours (7 weeks) overtime, not been paid for. So I fully understand what you mean when it comes to delivering on time and doing the right thing by the customer. I was just trying to point out to the OP, that time is money and therefore when asking something / service for free from someone, we need to understand and appreciate their side. |

No charge at Rolex, Shangrila East Wing, Philippines, despite my Sub-C having been bought from a foreign AD.

I don't understand how businesses operate that way...and stay in business.
My local jeweler removed three links on a Black Bay for $8. |
