I think if I go to an AD and announce my interest in "buying a Rollie" particularly a "Smurf" or a "Batman", my chance to negotiate a discount has lessened as I probably do not know the market or brand that well. I have gotten much better results by referring to model numbers, etc.
Does it matter? To most probably not. But I learn a lot on TRF, and prefer to keep the jargon aligned to Rolex's nomenclature, not nicknames.

I think pepsi and Coke are fine, I guess because it's simply a description of color that everyone recognizes and is easier to say than black and red, or blue and red. And it doesn't suggest you still have superhero fantasies.
The superhero ones I don't get, especially when one writes "Should I get a BLNR Batman?! Or, an LV Hulk???!!!" Kinda superfluous. But hey, to each his own. Rollie makes no sense, it's still two syllables, so one can't just say Rolex? |

I've been known to use "rootbeer" but none of the others: model numbers help cut through the ambiguity. The use of nicknames that promote ambiguity could be a harbinger of a cultural shift. I also don't engage in text interchanges that last minutes when a voice call could transmit or exchange information in mere seconds. I'm still not clear on all the different meanings of "lollipop" on this forum, I assume there is an underlying oral fixation....

Poll: do you accept all Rolex model nicknames, some or none?
Interesting topic...I have previously given approximately zero thought to the issue, and likely won't devote additional time to it, since I am ambivalent about nickname use. But I find it interesting folks may have strong feelings on this topic.
Honestly, I don't care one way or the other when people use nicknames, and sometimes find myself doing so for some (Pepsi, root beer, hulk, etc.) but not others. My view is that I am trying to communicate an idea about a thing, and as long as my idea is understood, I've considered the communication effective. In fact, on the few occasions I have seen sanctimonious, finger-wagging admonishments of members who have inadvertently violated some sort of unwritten rule against using a slang term others find offensive for whatever reason (like "batman" when referring to BLNR), I've simply ignored it - along with the use of whatever term originally offended that poster, and rolled my eyes. That sort of stuff (I.e. someone taking an issue that in the grand scheme is not a serious issue FAR too seriously and blasting another individual for it) is about the only thing I find irritating or unpleasant on this site. Mostly, I figure folks who "blaspheme" by using nicknames don't know any better and are ultimately here to learn stuff about a hobby, and it's easier to ignore it and be welcoming. Plus, let's be realistic in acknowledging we wouldn't hear sentences like, "those chamfers are fantastic," in 99.9% of the world's locations or with most company we keep either, since most folks wouldn't know what the hell a chamfer was. At least I wouldn't hear that type of thought from most people I know, and I am fine with that reality. I recognize, however, that some folks make their living buying/selling watches, and that it's serious business to them, and that others love collecting and take it extremely seriously. No disrespect intended...there's room for all kinds here, in my view. I'm still relatively new to the game myself and enjoy perusing the threads here to learn new information from those who may have more knowledge, different views, etc. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Pepsi is pretty much the only one I use. I won't even call the Day-Date a "President" unless specifically referring to the bracelet.

Like some and not others. Admittedly I don't have every Rolex reference number committed to memory, but would be happy getting by on the model names and coding (LN, BLRO, etc.).
I suppose I'm more amenable to the monikers that were already in existence when I boarded the Rolex ship and set sail than I am to those since. Human nature I suppose. The names that pre-date me seem to have always been there. Also, if a nickname develops organically I'm probably more open to it. Like say a new model is released and someone in the press or somewhere coins a term that spreads by word of mouth and sticks. But take the BLNR. The Batman literally came out of a "name the new GMT" thread on TRF. It's therefore contrived and makes me cringe along with some of the other candidates from that thread - PowerAde and Bruiser. Also, model names are one thing, but Rollie as a nickname for the company and entire line makes me barf, lol. Let's start referring to Patek as Pee Pee.

I think we should only use full names like Rolex Oyster Perpetual Submariner Date along with the complete product reference code.
No cute nicknames but you can optionally include AD name, date of purchase, and warranty details. |

I like that they prick the oh-so fragile ego bubbles of members whose personal sense of value is wrapped up in a frickin' watch or brand (Rollie).

This has come up on the forum a few times now. Every time I read this I can't help but ask myself, who cares? Maybe you like the names... maybe you would rather use reference numbers... At the end of the day we gather here to share an appreciation for watches. Let's just have fun!

Rollie I don't like because rappers and show-offs use it purely as a term for perceived success and wealth, while nicknames for an individual watch are OK by me as they are not used the same way by outsiders or even known to them.

Numbers all start looking like each other.
I like all nicknames except Rollie... When a person calls a Rolex by a nickname (Eg. Hulk) you know the person is a watch aficionado. But when someone calls a Rollex a "Rollie" you know they are not into horology...

There are some I like and some I don't care for. I keep it pretty formal with my watch.. usually just Submariner or Sub. I don't think there are any nicknames for a 14060.. or at least none that I have heard of.

I don't mind the nicknames. While I know a lot of references by number now, I don't know them all. It is easier for me know which model is being talked about, also less to type.

I'm all about learning all things Rolex/watches so I like to know both Ref#'s and nicknames too. I use both (depending on context), but have always considered nicknames as more in use among enthusiasts.

I can't say that I agree. If you call your BMW a Beemer or your Cadillac a Caddy, does that imply that you're not a car enthusiast? I would rather that the proper name for the particular watch be used but the nicknames, including Rollie, don't bother me. What does annoy me is when only a reference number is used, since who can really remember them all.

I could answer that in extremely accurate detail however I don't wish to be banned after such a short time being here.
