Regarding PCLs And Scratches

There are a fair amount of posts regarding PCLs getting scratched, or just scratches in general. There seem to be a number of first-time Rolex owners who are concerned about their brand new watches getting scratched up, or worse yet, their lovely PCLs getting scratched.

This brought to mind my wife's Datejust. She wears it every day, all day, and does not baby it. If you look closely at it in certain harsh light it looks completely scratched to hell. However, in regular situations with normal natural light, it still looks like new. The PCLs look as great as they ever did.

So despair not the scratches, my nervous friends. Your watch will look awesome even after many years of wear and life. I dare say - it will look better!

And since decorum dictates that all threads require pics, please see below comparison photos of the aforementioned Datejust. The pic on the left was taken with the flash on, pic on the right was taken just seconds later with the flash off (what I consider to be "normal" lighting). The scratches all but disappear in normal lighting.

Good evening.

Absolutely.

You (the owner) are the only one who sees them, if you choose to.

Then again, I'm picking up my GMTIIc from the spa tomorrow, and it should be in showroom condition again, which will be delightful.

Yup, eventually, all the little swirls blend into a fine haze, looking just as good if not better.

You just reminded me of a comment I heard at the Rolex flagship (Wempe) store in NYC a couple of years ago: the 904L steel to some extent can heal itself from scratches over time. Still shaking my head about that one.

If you wear it or handle it, your watch will get scratched. Comes with the territory. I agree with you. Nothing noticeable on my mine after a fair amount of wear unless I go looking for scratches.

The first single scratches always hurt the deepest, but it takes some time for it to be uniformly "scratched".
I do think there is the period where you have a new looking bracelet with only a few scratches that doesn't look as good as when it's got a whole load more fine scratches....if that makes sense?

This makes complete sense. Go big or go home! The in-between phase is the worst part. 👍

nice post!

Someone recently post about prefering a matt or dull look. That OP can certainly let my wife borrow his watch, it will definitely have a "matt patina" after a month.
