I Heard Only Geezers And Wannabees Wear Rolex...
I was at the Country Club for lunch today....
There was a discussion of watches at the next table (I did not get involved). One guy was saying that he would not wear a Rolex for the above reasons, and that anybody with "real" money wouldn't touch them. Well, many of my friends never had any chance of ever getting a "stimulus" check, and most of them wear a Rolex of some sort.. So maybe I don't understand what "real" money is. So.....did this guy have some insider information I don't know. Did somebody publish some rules and I haven't got a copy ???

No, but I can see where they're coming from. Then again, people shouldn't be concerned about that sort of stuff to start with.

I've always considered Rolex a symbol of accomplishment not that of riches/status...like they say; "a crown for each ACCOMPLISHMENT" Like I stated in my own post about my first Rolex, I made the goal to get mine after finishing college - this week is the last week of my MBA, so I finally got my Bluesy

I think he was confusing "real" money with "new" money. The guy reminds me of Steve Martin's character in The Jerk.

When I was dead broke I had a roof, a car and a Rolex. When I was half broke, I had a roof, a car, and a Rolex. When I was comfortable financially, I had a roof, car, and a Rolex. Now, I still have a roof, a car, and a Rolex. When I die I will have a roof and a Rolex. Seems the car is gone.

A lot of people do look at Rolex from a very shallow level.
The shallowness of the knowledge generally focuses on the 'bling' factor, the comparative price to other watches and all the other negative things you can think about. On the other hand, if one were to look a little more at the quality, craftsmanship, technology and functionality, one might well appreciate why a Rolex has so much to offer and why they are not a waste of money but in many cases offer the owner such a high level of enjoyment, satisfaction and if it has to go.......return on initial outlay. ![]() It's great talking about Rolex, thanks Larry ![]()

I'm A Geezer with a Rolex, But I Wasn't When I Started Wearing Rolex
I think the '80s ruined the perception of Rolex. By the same token, maybe BMWs, fine automobiles, are derided as "yuppie cars."

I think that it is also a matter of perception. If you grew up having had contact with Rolex (uncle or dad etc..), you will have an appreciation for the brand and its good qualities. If the only time you ever heard about a Rollie was when somebody was commenting negatively about that 'pompas arse' wearin one.. then your view of the brand might be skewed a bit. JMO :-)

Wow so John Mayer and Brad Pitt are geezers????
Interesting... Old money and new money both appreciate the quality and functionality of a Rolex.

I think the guy is just jealous and secretlly wants a Rolex. And talking smack about the brand is his way of making himself feel better about not having one!
![]() ![]() It's not the suit that makes the man. Nor does a Rolex dictate wether or not a person is a wonnabee! Besides if someone can afford a Rolex, more than likely their not a wonnabee. And I agree that Rolex is a sign of accomplishment. He's just a Rolexafobe secretlly wanting to come out !!!!! ![]() ![]() |

Jealousy. Plain and simple. Some people just can't pull off wearing a Rolex either. It just looks wrong on them. That or their bowing to peer pressure.
Let's see who else currently wears Rolex..... Me A friend of mine who comes from OLD money - he's 31. Yngwie Malmsteen (who dares calls this guys a geezer!!!) Charlie Sheen Sarah-Jane "Trinny" Woodall (definitely NOT a geezer!!) Of course I could go on endlessly....but who wants that? |

I've said it before, people choose to spend their money on differrnt things. Look at the foreclosere rate of $500,000 homes, and beemers and Mercedes being repoed (sp?). Some do live way beyond their means. Many of the people who try to impress others with their toys are only a couple of paychecks away from losing everything. There is some truth to old vs new money. I've known alot of people from old money who try their best to hide it. I've also known some people with good incomes who are up to their heads in debt. I actually prefer understated watches which don't draw alot of attention.

WELL....I am a GEEZER and....
...and a collector.
To the best of my knowledge, NO ONE in my family ever owned a Rolex with the exception of my brother. He actually purchased one new back in the late 60's early 70's. He was the first in my lineage to own one. I started collecting in the early 70's. However, I have never purchased a brand new one....maybe someday. Also, never even purchased any of my collection at an AD. I wear one daily....today I wore my 16613 Sub. Last week I wore my Expl II. I think the week before I wore a Tudor Day Date....etc, etc, etc. I MAY wear my 1803 tomorrow ![]() ![]() Let us ALL enjoy our watches!!!!!!! ![]() Oh...almost forgot...I got my "BUSH MONEY" yeasterday and already purchased a new laptop! Uncle sugar should like me. Stan. ![]() |

Well, to be frank. I would not think too much about a person that judge someone from what brand of watch one wear. They are the true losser not the person that wear a Rolex.

This is funny i remeber about 2 years ago when i was in town, i stopped outside the Rolex AD as i always did when i passed and was admiring the Rolex's and dreaming about the day i actually step in to buy one, when some scumbag walked behind me and shouted at me "SNOB" and walked off, i looked around and there he was scowling away at me with his wife and two kids feeling proud of himself for calling me a snob? For what window shopping, now how pathetic is that! All i could do was laugh!

Real money is something you cannot buy. Is something you are born with, even if you don't have money. I can luckily said I belong to the new money thing and that makes life a lot easier, but i get a lot more respect wearing my trustfull Timex than a tacky Rolex, real or fake. |
