Thanks to all the welcomes, I've been lurking here for a few months but this post just made decide to drop my first post.

The AD called me a few mintues ago and the salesperson that I have been dealing with said he was trying to get me the Daytona without any extra BS. I'm going to give him a few days and see what he can do. He is a nice guy, it was the store manager that told me I needed to buy something else to get the Daytona. Also he said that their company received 4 blacks and 1 white yesterday. And of course I want the white one. I'm crossing my fingers that they actually come through. It's hard to get much accomplished up here in Indiana.

And a question, everyone says AD are we allowed to post the store names, or is that off limits?

I'm pulling your leg too. I used to live in the OC when the Marine Bases Air Stations were active. Sadly, all these rich folks moved next door and suddenly discovered that jets make noise and kicked us out. I guess it was too nice of a place for Marines to live when the clamor of the "beautiful people" was so strong. You know, the "can't you do your defending the country from someplace else ?" types.

Still kidding. My best friends in life still live there.

Seriously though, there were times when I just wanted to knock on a door or two of those beautiful houses in Newport and Laguna simply to inquire what one does to be able to afford such a pad.

You have to admit that luxury items such as a nice watch seems to be within the reach of more folks in S Cal than the general population; so amid an economic downturn, you're more likely to see a highly sought after watch in GA than in CA. Agree?

I wouldn't hesitate to get one from a grey market (reputable) dealer. Enjoy it!

But I will be buying watches for at least another 40 years I hope, I would think they would see the positives. I'm just going to keep asking around or end up buying on the gray market it seems.
I'm big on referrals also, and think that they should appreciate the possibility of future business.

BTW, where is your condo down there?

Wweaver, we have a place in Bonita Springs.

And I agree about referals, if I did business like that I probably wouldn't be in a position to be buying any rolex yet alone a Daytona.

Man, some people have all the luck!

Let me know if you want to unload a Daytona.

Of course, I was just kidding around, Matt.

Still, this SS Daytona business leaves a bitter taste. But the upside is that many of our colleagues here on TRF are making out well in the "Daytona Sweepstakes," even if I am not.

By the way, whenever I go anywhere, I want to knock on doors and ask people how they make money. I'm baffled by the entire enterprise.

As for the Marines, well, you know, there are good ones and bad ones, I guess. Just like everything else. I prefer to make love, not war. And when love isn't available, I'm willing to settle for sex.

I paid $12K for a Brand new 2008 SS Daytona (White Face) from a dealer in Westchester, NY. He was referred to me by a heavy hitter I know. I love the watch and don't mind paying over retail. He had 2 others (2006 and 2005 models) if anyone else was interested as of a month ago. He said he gets about 2 a month from Wall St guys who need money. He pays $11K and sells them for $12K. Mine was brand new, still had all the stickers on it, full box, papers, M serial, LEC, everything. I would buy from him again.

I've been to every AD in Dallas and asked them about the Daytonas. It's all the same story, they can get you one if you spend about at least $30k. And usually they prefer it to be on something else besides watches, such as jewelry since the mark-up is higher. Jared's says it doesn't do that, but the last time I heard of them selling one...it went to a guy who bought 5 Rolexes from them. And for some reason, they can never find the list when I ask them to see it to verify that my name is on it. And yes, I have bought a Rolex from them.

Anyone can have a white dial Daytona right now even at some ADs if you are willing to pay the premium, but the situation is changing. Call some ADs and tell them you are interested, give them your phone number. The economy in the sates is having a hard time and not many people are buying Rolexes even if they get the call about their dream watch. I think you will get a call soon.

I hope you are right JCLZ. I spoke with my AD yesterday who has both white and black dial SS models, but is a couple thousand over MSRP. He will also sell me a white dial TT for the same price as the SS. Go figure.

There is hope though, I did not buy any previous things from this AD, called in and long story short, got a ss white daytona at retail. Lucky i guess, seems to be much tougher.

It seems to go in cycles. I got mine at MSRP after waiting about six months (and charming the store manager with boxes of candy, Starbucks and bagels every week or so. Well I never claimed to have scrupels!) Anyway I was in there over the weekend and they actually had a couple in, they were about to call good customers to offer them at MSRP. I asked if they were now easier to get and the manager said not really, they just got lucky and had a shipment.

Who knows what really goes on behind the scenes Maybe the SS Daytona Fairy visits ADs that have been good this year or something.

Grey Market refers to dealers that are not certified by rolex. Its shouldnt be retail and its not illegal black market. You can pretty much buy anything on the grey market, in the 80's pretty much anyone that had a really cool Ferrari or Mercedes benz probably got it grey...

I went to a reputable AD in Coral Gables and the rep told me that Rolex is discontinuing the SS Daytona.. WTF? I actually purchased my wife's engagement ring from her a few years back so it's not like i just met her and she's trying to shun me away.

Any truth to this?

Most likley you went to Mayors to look at a watch. They are probably the worst when it comes to getting a SS Daytona. First they will tell you that you cant get a SS Daytona. After that they may put you on a five year waiting list. When the watch comes they probably will ask you to pay over retail. Save yourself the hastle and go to Buchwalds in the Seybold Building. They have a large selection of new Rolex watches and are willing to deal...

Take a look at this from a different approach. My AD has flat out told me that to get a Daytona or a GV, you have to spend 20K in the store. Current MSRP in the US is $9,200, with 8% Tax = $736 for a total of $9,936. If (and we know this will eventually happen) there is another price increase of 10%, that puts MSRP at $10,120 and tax at $810 for a total of $10,930 out the door. Using this logic, which in my mind makes perfect sense from a business perspective, buying a BNIB or LNIB Daytona for around $10,500 makes sense, plus you do not have to spend the additional $9,000 to get put on the list.

You were right! My AD just called to say I could have the SS white dial Daytona "M" series for MSRP. And, it's only been a couple days since he asked thousands more.
