Would You Consider Buying a Driverless Car?
After they are (to a certain extent) perfected? Seems like they would be practical for seniors on the verge of losing their driver's licenses, the DUI-prone (including recreational potheads), chronic texters, and teenagers. On the other hand, a self-driving feature would be kind of lame to have in a Ferrari or McLaren. Curious as to how the auto insurers and courts will be handling liability claims from the standpoint of operator v.s. manufacturer oversights and/or alleged computer error/failure.

Nope, not until the technology has been in the market for a few years and is proven. That's just me though...

Once proven, I am one of the ones who can't wait for driverless cars.
I'm so sick and tired of all the distracted driving. It causes more deaths and harmful accidents than the things we can't talk about here. I'm hoping the next car I buy will be the last one I have to drive.

Driverless cars. Hmmm. Wonder what a terrorist could do with a capability like that?
I predict they will never come to market Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I like driving, but I'd consider a driverless car. Probably lease vs. own.
Can you send a driverless car out on its own to run an errand? |

I would love to have a system that could be hacked and leave me helpless!

Absolutely not. I enjoy driving and quite frankly, as technology advances I feel more of the driving joys are being taken away to all kinds of assistance systems.

I bought a 2016 toyota knowing the 17 basically drive themselves (and saved about 4k). I think in maybe 10 years I would consider it just because I like to drive and I think the tech will start to advance so fast in the first several generations with purpose built chips vs throwing lots of gpgpu at it.
I am looking forward though to pressing a button on my phone and having my car meet me with automatic valet and parking. It will transform the economy though imo. |

Sure, to be honest I don't think the age of driverless cars is really too far away...

I thought the endgame of a driverless world was fractional ownership of a car.

No chance and if I could stop anyone else buying one I would.
A pox on society.

Read somewhere that Uber is experimenting with them in downtown San Francisco as a fully automated taxi service. The only problem to date is that one of them almost ran over a pedestrian at an intersection. Apparently the 'panic stop' feature hasn't been perfected. Uber/Google blamed the pedestrian for the near miss.

I would and I believe it's coming sooner than we think. this year 2017, Googke will be testing driverless cars here in Waterloo.
It would be perfect for Taxi and Uber. |

I would get one if I get so old I can't drive anymore.
Personally though, I think when driverless cars reach critical mass on the streets, those who prefer to drive themselves will find it difficult to navagate around cars that are slow to accelerate and would probably would never approach the posted speed limits. It's hard enough to deal with people who are stoned or drunk or otherwise too impaired to drive competently. I guess when everyone is using one, it won't matter, though. I suspect no fault insurance may be the answer.

In certain applications a perfected system may prove useful, like rush hour. If it's bumper to bumper on the freeway it would sure be nice if everyone was doing 100+ instead of standing still.
![]() It seems though that the way this would play out there would always be driver responsibility, much like a pilot in a commercial aircraft can take command anytime something goes wrong. The problem with that is so many people aren't responsible as it is with all the texting and talking. Give them an automated system and they won't pay any attention at all. None.

As a personal injury lawyer, I cannot wait until these put my profession out of business. I am so tired of seeing people's lives ended or devastated by someone who thinks a text from their friend is more important than paying attention to their own driving. Even with current technology, the driverless car is safer than the average human behind the wheel.

The technology will only get better. That's no guarantee of adoption, so I'm not sure how things will play out.
On January 1, 2050, I will only be 59. I wonder what things will be like -- maybe driving yourself will be illegal by that point |
