I don't understand. The watch could be valuable. It was valuable enough to someone to leave it to you in his will.
Keep the watch. Insure it. Tell the new wife it's "Hands Off", not an option to sell. If selling the watch for $$ to spend is a priority then the grandfather should have left it to someone else.
BTW if it's valuable make sure it's documented that you owned it yourself before getting married.

This is kind of a weird thread. Why do you have to get rid of it because you're getting married? Do you mean you want to sell it? Not sure I'm getting this...

Amen! Keep the watch, save money by eloping and raise money by selling your car instead. Your wedding is only a one day event, but your classic Daytona with help you keep time the rest of your life.

Often when a loved one give you a timepiece, its symbolic of your coming of age, that you are now in control of your time. Prove to yourself that your Grandfather chose you well over all of his other Grandchildren, that you are worthy of such a great gift by keeping it well in his memory.

Now put on that watch, and post us some pics. Congratulations and wear it in good health.

Cheers!

Steve, "taking the micky'' is a typically British term for "playing a prank''. Marke's basically sceptical about the whole thread since why would anyone sell a potentially valuable family heirloom just because they're getting married? Can't say I blame him. Hope this helps.

I must agree! Why in the world getting married would mean you can't keep it??? I am dying to know why, and can't wait to hear the explanation. If you just don't like it or want it then it's your watch and your buisness alone what to do with it, but I just don't understand.... I will say if she wants you to get rid of it for whatever reason, she would be the wrong girl for me. Not just because I am a watch freak but I value heirlooms tremendously and couldn't be tied to someone who couldn't appreciate that. I am assuming too much, but I am just dis-combobulated over this. Wow!

I agree. If she is making you get rid of an heirloom against your will then RUN NOW.

If I had a dollar of everytime I have read a newbs thread of " help me identify this Rolex" that was a heir loom and needs to sell it I would be rich. I may be off base but I think it's a replica that someone wants to see if it passes on this board so he can rip someone off. Thats my 2 cents

Go to www.vintagerolexforum.com and post a picture and ask for info. Be careful though, if its legit you will get a ton of offers on it. If it is truly a proto type Daytona it could be a $100K watch.

I don't think anybody can give you any estimates on it with the poor photographs and the issues..

An Oyster dial and a non-waterproof pusher set-up

A line that Beverly Hills RSC says it's authentic but wouldn't tell you the make or model.

Incredibly poor photographs..

If your watch is truly authentic, which has certainly not been established here, then any RSC will give you a written service estimate, even if they won't service it, and that will include make, model, dial, and bracelet numbers/description.. These are things you need just to start..

I thought the bride's side of the family paid for the wedding? That's still a peculiar reason to want to sell and it doesn't make sense to me.

That is a pretty rare watch. I've only seen one other so far. That one was from ~1960. It really looks a lot like a speedmaster. tell you what sell it to me cheap and I'll tell you for sure if it's real ;)

I sold the other one I saw to a auction house, it brought ~50k as is. Don't sell it, keep it. That is a part of your family heritage. Fix it and wear it with pride.

Money comes and goes... but a Rolex like that will only come once in a lifetime and is NOT replaceable. You should appreciate it not only for its monetary value but also the fact that your grandfather wanted you to have something very special!

If you need to save money for the wedding, save on the flowers and the invitation cards. They'll be in the garbage next day.

Keep the watch. If it still means nothing to you then sell it to someone who will appreciate it more.
