SF Dentists....?

OK, so my vacation isn't starting great.

Hello from North Beach BTW!

On my 12 hour flight yesterday I started to develop toothache. Wonderful.

Anyone knows a good dentist, preferably close to my hotel located at the wharf?

Been googeling all morning (woke up at 4AM). I think best would be someone who accepts "emergencies" and are open today.

I don’t live in Sf, but searched on Yelp and found these two that are close to Fisherman’s Wharf. They have high reviews and open today. Good luck. Maybe some of the locals will chime in today for you.

I ended up at the first one of these. They had a time at 10am.

Didn’t really find anything wrong, took x-rays and cleaned the tooth. Night need a root fill. Lovely.

Glad you were able to see a dentist and that they didn’t find anything wrong. I hope your tooth is okay and doesn’t interfere with your holiday too much.

These things always seem to come up at the worst possible time : I'm glad you at least had the chance to see and dentist. Hopefully you'll be able to enjoy the rest of the trip without any issues and have that addressed when you're back home.

On the plus side, I had a lovely dentist. She was great, and dental care is surprisingly affordable in the US. About same price as Finland. (Private clinic)

Not near your hotel but very reputable 5-Star and without a doubt best in SF. We have a lot of friends in that circle and everyone knows who’s who. Hope you get it sorted.

What I don’t get is them taking 4-6 x-rays, and not being sure of my problem.

I do grind teeth at night, but I have a rail for that.

Glad you’re getting things taken care of in SF. Not sure if you’re heading to Newport Beach or in that direction later, but my brother is a very well established dentist there, just in case. Have a good trip.

That happens from time to time. Patient comes in. Xrays WNL. Existing restorations/crown margins look good. Tap on a few teeth in the area of your complaint. No teeth give a red flag reaction like you wanting to jump out the chair when tapped. Press on the gums in the area of complaint around the apex of the roots of a few teeth. No complaints of pain there. Do a cold test on a few teeth in the area of complaint. Teeth that have had root canals the patient should not feel the cold. Teeth that have not had root canals the patient should feel the cold. If we do all that and get no red flag reactions and see nothing on the xray there is not much im gonna do. The last thing I want to do is manipulate treatment. Because then you have done unnecessary work. The patient has wasted unnecessary money. And if they still have the same complaint after you have manipulated treatment then you got a pissed off patient. So whatever money that patient paid is not worth the bad reviews/patient complaints.

Depends....typically I test 3 teeth. 1 in front of the tooth the patient is complaining about. And 1 tooth behind it. If your baseline for all 3 of those teeth is what you just described it could be nothing. However if that reaction is what you just described for 1 tooth only. Consistently. Then that could be a red flag.

Andreas, Welcome to SF! Did the dentist check your occlusion? If X-rays and clinical evaluation are negative for need of a root canal and assuming you have no periodontal abscess, you may have trauma from occlusion or a cracked tooth. How does your bite feel? You say you grind your teeth, have you been wearing your bite guard?

Can you be more specific regarding your symptoms of pain? Dull vs sharp? Duration of pain? What were you doing when the pain started - chewing, drinking something hot or cold, eating something sweet? Can you locate the pain to one specific tooth or is it in an area?
