Simply...The Wine Thread
Fortress Cabernet Sauvignon 2013
Enjoyable cab for a $22 bottle. Winemaker Notes Fortress Cabernet Sauvignon delivers aromas of dark fruit, mocha and baking spices on the nose. The palate exhibits well integrated tannins that complement the subtle earthy flavors of pomegranate, blackberry and sweet pipe tobacco. With a rich, opulent mouth feel, Fortress is an approachable wine with a silky, lush finish. Critical Acclaim Wine Enthusiast WE | 91 This wine is a steal for its quality—well-rounded, expressive and complemented with additions of Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Syrah and Merlot. Cherry and vanilla flavors predominate, accented with cedar and tobacco, the texture remaining soft and smooth. Editors' Choice.

Long story short-
Father in law was talking with a friend about wine, he put him in touch with another friend that has some wine for sale. He said he’s open to fair offers. I don’t have the budget he does, but we talk wine etc so he asked me what I thought would be a fair offer. This is way out of my league, but in the realm of some of you guys. Any help is appreciated! Thanks I’m assuming they’re all 750ml bottles 1991 Caymus Special Selection 1987 Opus One 1990 Robert Mondavi Reserve

Hey my friend — those are some very nice selections from an era in Napa that continues to be my favorite. Stylistically these wines are going to be more of the original image in which these wines were created. For example - the Caymus is going to be much more old world - vs completely fruit forward as it is today. 87 was a spectacular vintage in Napa - and yielded some very wonderful wines with significant longevity in the cellar — 87 Montelena Estate remains one of my favorites. Having said that provenance is truly the key here in determining value as these vintages are definitely on the decline now- however many of them still very beautiful representations of a time and style now long gone. What was the original source? How have they been cellared? Have they been moved a lot? Older vintage wine purchases can be very very tricky — a lot like vintage watches in a way — for California wines — to me the big question is storage — for French wines it’s more the provenance. For me — the majority of my older vintage Napa’s have all been sourced directly from the wineries... The beautiful thing about today — is that you can pull out a Coravin and have a look under the hood - if one was willing. If it were me — just going with my gut - if I got a call out of the blue - sight unseen — I’m not even sure I could honestly make an offer. With more details into some of the aforementioned areas — and I was amenable - I’d probably be in the neighborhood of a $500-$700 offer — to assume the ‘risk’ if you will. I will pass this along, hopefully we can get some extra clarity on the storage and sourcing. I owe you a drink! Again, thank you ![]() ![]()

Many people debate the use of www.wine-searcher.com for prices and do take their average price index with a grain of salt. There can be too many high-price retailers or at the opposite end, auction-housing dumping's of certain bottles can skew those prices. But if you look at the low retail price available for that bottle you at least have a ball park of the price and a starting point providing everything with storage and provenance is kosher.

Look what I just found in my fathers library. He won double gold with it in 1985. He has a case of it left. I am going to crack it open this weekend and see how it held up. I hope 35 years has been good to it.

I prefer whites and rose's. Winking Owl in by far my favorite brand because it's a $3 bottle that taste on par with a lot of $20+ bottled I've had. I like their chardonney and white zinfindel.
I don't normally drink reds because I've gotten some mean headaches from just one glass (I have migraines, and think the red wine is a mild trigger). that said, Winking Owl's Merlot is really tasty. Winking Owl is the Aldi store brand. |
