TRF “trusted sellers” now asking for watch first before payment?
Just listed my BLNR and already received PMs from 2 trusted sellers here, one a Bond Submariner sponsor.
I prefer to deal with well established members even if it means selling the watch for less, but what surprised me is both asked for watch first before payment, unless I take Paypal. It wasn’t like this just a few months ago, is this the norm going forward? |

Personally I feel that the seller gets to dictate the terms of the purchase. So if you are uncomfortable sending before payment then you have the right to deny their terms and seek a different buyer.
99% of the time I’d demand an upfront payment but depending on the trusted seller I’d feel safe sending to them. Heck, I’ve had trusted sellers mail me the watch before they received payment. Trust and an established relationship works both ways. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Same for me. I sold one to David. He sent me a label. I got the money the next day when he received the watch. There's a reason he and others are reputable. CYOA

Just curious if this is the new norm caused by insurance policy change, sudden rise in fraud, or some other factor.

I wouldn't be forced into PayPal, unless they are willing to pay you a premium to use it.
If you aren't in a hurry, and are uncomfortable with their demands, move on. |

Just reassure yourself that these trusted sellers' reputations are worth substantially more than a typical single watch, so they'd be pretty dumb to try and screw you over assuming they receive your watch in good order.

The fact that the TRF grey sellers are wanting to buy it from you means you have it priced too low...

I see no problem with it. They have too much to lose business wise. As long as you have proof of ownership and insurance I would go for it.

If they’re a trusted seller and you have insurance on the watch, then there’s nothing to worry about, particularly if they’ve set up shipping.

I've sold to DavidSW and had payment wired the next day. I sent the watch first with the shipping label provided.

I have done it both ways. Sent the watch and then received payment and received payment when I did the deal. Once you have done enough transactions with a TS then things change with history and trust. Not a big issue. It is worth it to me to deal with a TS. They have earned the reputation and they work hard to keep it. Send the watch, get your money and move on.

You have to understand from the Trusted Seller point of view. They're a KNOWN quantity, you are not. They also deal with a lot of watches and get watches that are "over sold" (seller thinks his watch is "mint" when in reality, it's "very good"). So this way, they can guarantee that they are getting what the seller is describing and that the watch is authentic. As soon as that checks out, they send the money. If they sent it ahead of time, then they run of risk of getting scammed.
At the end of day, it's your watch so it's up to you. |

You guys do know that TRF doesn't have any "Trusted Sellers", right.
Enter into any transaction after you have done your due diligence and are satisfied with the terms.

If the 2 "trusted" members are dealers who have a business operated from a real store (brick and mortar) then yes, it is normal. It's the same with any other watch dealer with the exception of good ole Bob at Bob's watches. I wouldn't trust them for any reason. Aside from good ole Bob and his minions, every jeweler requires you to send them the watch so they can evaluate the watch, and then they send prompt payment.
If this were a private buyer, someone not in the business, who is sitting at his computer and looking to buy a watch, then I wouldn't do it. You are the seller, so you dictate the terms of the sale, but the situation you describe is exactly how all jewelers do things. The other option is to take your watch to their store and wait while they look at it and make you a final offer. Only business I can give you solid advice is Bob's watches .. Bob and his minions (or Paul .. whatever the owner's name is) are not well regarded for good reason. They make you an offer which is already unfair (to low) and once they get your beloved Rolex in their clutches, they find all sorts of reasons to come back with a final offer which is lower than the offer they quoted you. Its even worse if you try to trade. They rip you off by paying to little, and they rip you off by charging way to much for their watches .. and they never deal on the sale price of their watches .. they lie telling you they can't reduce their price because they are the lowest which is a complete lie .. So, they offer you a price, you send them the watch, and they offer you lower price .. They except you to take less, but refuse to take less for their watches Sorry to get off track on Bob .... Yes the situation you describe is normal .. Except for Bob .. What that business does is not normal

Do they TRF members protect their data? See this thread -
https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=585641 Seems like there have been incidents of identity theft in this forum, so yeah I would be concerned about posting a watch to anyone without payment. Just makes me concerned that you are promoting the shipping of valuable watches to people (it doesn't matter who they are IMHO) without payment. |
