YG Day-Date 36mm As Only Rolex And Final Watch?

After going on a watch binge the last four years (Lange Saxonia 35mm and 1815 Up/Down, VC Historiques 1948 Triple Calendar (later this year), Patek Calatrava 5119J, Grand Seiko GMT, and an Omega De Ville), I plan to get one “final” watch in the next year or so (most likely early 2020).

I was going to get the OP 39mm black dial. However, I am giving serious consideration about going total old school and getting the YG Day-Date 36mm:

Now I don’t think I could ever wear it in public. However, as a watch I wear at home the Day-Date is extremely tempting. Am I a fool for contemplating buying a watch that I would only wear at home?

I don’t understand why you would not wear it in public, but it’s a gorgeous watch and certainly makes sense as a grail/final watch/one watch to rule them all :-)

Why wouldn't you wear it in public? Such a beautiful watch going to waste.

I prefer my watches to be under the radar. The Day-Date is not that kind of watch :)

As for the one to rule them all, I already have that; one from my Holy Trinity (ALS, VC, Patek).

Ha! You are blessed then! So I’d say if it pleases you to have the DD for the house - go for it!

Regarding the flash - I don’t disagree. However, yellow gold is more and more common in younger folks that I’ve observed. I’m not talking Day Dates;-) but other “fashion brands” with gold plating. My point is that it’s less noticeable than you might think, although there is no denying that Rolex stands out. It’s perhaps just not as flashy from a distance as you may think it is. Nonetheless wear it how it makes you happy and by all means don’t let me or anyone else tell you where and how to do that! Cheers

I feel similarly about my 18038, I rarely wear attire that can hold up to the DD so I end up wearing it around the house. But recently I've considered putting it on a leather strap. It would be considerably more under the radar without the president bracelet.

It is a beautiful watch

While it's definitely not the most "under the radar" watch out there, I don't think it draws enough attention to justify never wearing it out of the house.

I say you get it and wear it to the post office a few times. Post office people are really nosy because there is nothing else to do when you’re waiting in line. Once you realize nobody is staring at your watch you will feel comfortable wearing it elsewhere :)

I feel YG DD draws less or about the same level of attention as the bluesy. No problem to wear it in public places as long as they are in safe areas

I do like WG. However, if I was going to get a DD , it would be in YG. There is something about it that looks perfect (and this is coming from someone who does not like the cyclops).

I get it...

I totally get it! I love green-ish Rolex models, including the DD, but just way too flashy for my lifestyle. Every once in a while, I wear it at home. Wore it to the shops once. Felt like there was (gold) searchlight strapped to my wrist, powerful enough to illuminate the flag on the moon...

Who knows, maybe I will grow into more as i get older (in my 40s now).

I also love the 36 mm size. Proportions feel perfectly balanced, and more aesthetically pleasing vs the larger DD. Each to his own I guess

Exactly. The most common comment I get on my DD is “Cool watch. Is it Michael Kors?” I nod and smile.

The point is, very few people know/care about your watch, so buy what you love and wear it wherever you want. If you’re self-conscious, just slip in under your sleeve.

From an OP top a DD. Thats a jump!

If you do get it, please wear it in public though.

I think people will notice the watch. People may think it is impolite to ask.

I'm inclined to say "Go for it!"...unless you live someplace where it might be dangerous/risky to wear it. I don't see the point of having a "one & only piece that you can't wear on a regular basis, wherever day-to-day living takes you.

An around the house watch?

I don’t see why you couldn’t just wear your DD under a sleeve.

If you frequent locations that are too dangerous for a Rolex, you shouldn’t be there in the first place.

But the DD is a great daily wearer.

Ok. I hate everybody who responded to this thread. Damn enablers! Right now I am thinking either the YG, black dial DD or the WG blue dial DD.

The DD is a great choice and I have a friend who wears one everyday as a one and only.

If only one Rolex I'd go platinum if budget allows, go hard or go home.

Like Platinum Rolex dials, but the budget does not allow.

To each their own but....I would never spend that $ on a watch I would only wear in the house... seems like a waste. I have a watch I’d choose to “just wear around the house” because I have plans to ....do yard work, work on something for a vehicle, pressure clean, work on pool, etc.....it’s a G-Shock just my humble opinion.

I throw on a leather strap when I want it more casual. It is below the radar in my opinion on leather.

I think everyone is overthinking the Day-Date. I wear mine on a weekly rotation and wear it everywhere. My daily wear is shorts and a polo shirt. I really don’t think that anyone notices or cares what I am wearing.
