Are they still around ? Seriously, I don’t know how they make it. It’s a shame because yes they make fine movements, no question

IWC, along with Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Piaget, Panerai, Vacheron Constantin, Baume & Mercier, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Dunhill, Montblanc and Lange & Sohne, is owned by Richemont, one of the world’s leading luxury goods groups.

They had a tough year in 2016, but my understanding is that Vacheron has been doing quite lately. One positive is that it’s an in-demand brand in China from what I have been told.

A better watch in terms of quality and horological history the VC should be an easier choice. The fact that the newer model also has an in-house movement, is a total bombproof workhorse and not least theblue dial is stunning should also make it a no brainer but I do like the RG YM. Both will likely depreciate as fast but the VC really does bomb on the secondary market

if you are referring to the iron cross, it was a Prussian symbol first and that isnt the cross on the watch. So there you go

the iron cross looks remarkably similar to the knights templar cross too even though for this watch/brand its the Maltese cross which is widely used by fire departments . Making a Nazi connection is a stretch as you could just as easily say it reminds me of firefighters as that would be more accurate.

I love VCs but would probably stick to their dress watches. For a tool watch Rolex is my choice.

Interesting observation. What about Maltese cross, St. John’s order, that too?

Edit: just saw a post above pointing the obvious too.

Well I’m blowed!
It’s well beyond my imagination for sure but I know nothing about Nazi insignia and I would dare to suggest most people don’t!
And what a slight on a beautiful watch!

you can look at the clouds and see a rabbit. Doesn't make it a real rabbit. People see what they want to see, not what it is.

Vacheron as a brand has so much potential. I own a vintage piece from the late 40s and I can see why they've always been considered to be part of the trilogy. But in my opinion they have lost their lustre quite a bit. Richemont needs to separate this brand (similar to Lange) from the rest of their line up. They have so much character and history to be pumping out "reissues" which is what they have been doing way too often.

Other than the reissues, they do not have a distinctive watch... well the Overseas is the closets.

Slight tangent... but back on topic. I love the Overseas and would probably chose it over your Rolex options; however, I personally found the Overseas a bit too thick. The blue dial is beautiful though.

Vacheron watches are nice, buy what you like to own and wear, not for the resale value.

My only gripe with Richemont is that they've screwed the pooch with many of the brands in their portfolio. VC recently came out with a few "entry" models that shared movements with their other brands. Those watches still look great, but when you buy something in the 5-figure range, you'd also expect them to have their own movement as well.

I'd skip the VC at this price point anyway. Their complicated watches are nicer imo.

I'd get the Genta IWC and save a few bucks

Yes, I know history of VC and meaning of the cross on its watch.
However, I disagree that fire department cross resembles these two. It's different.
The point was that for me personally VC cross resembles iron cross(even more so being small) and that is what turning me away from the VC brand.

both use the Maltese cross. One is stylized to include text and has a circle in it. Take the circle away and it tapers into a point at the center. Its the same cross drawn a bit differently, specifically Maltese as its meaningful for fire departments, more so than one of the probably hundreds of other cross variants.

The point is it INS'T a german cross, but the fact you think it looks like one to you turns you off the brand. Following that same logic an Invicta looks like a Rolex, but it inst a Rolex. So does that mean Rolex isnt acceptable because it could possibly look like something else? I just dont get the logic.
