Rolex Bracelets: No Longer 904L?
I just happened to be flipping through Rolex’s website, and I noticed Rolex now asserts only the watch cases are made out of 904L stainless steel, with the exception of the SeaDweller. When one scrolls down to the bracelet section of any watch profile, it doesn’t say OysterSteel or 904L. Did I just miss this announcement or something?
As a sidenote, I don’t especially think it’s a big deal. However, I seem to remember several years ago, Rolex claimed all stainless steel models’ cases and the bracelets were made out of 904L. Practically speaking, when I saw an ExplorerII at my local A.D. last week, I didn’t notice any difference visually between the bracelet and the watch |

Oystersteel is another name for 904L - Rolex likes to personalize things (same steel just different name).
Rolex just changed the way they describe the steel at Basel 2018. Now instead of saying 904L steel, everyone says Oystersteel. Was discussed below: https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=593302

I gotcha—now I see. You’re correct. I’m on my iPhone so the “specifications” section doesn’t automatically expand on the mobile version of the website. My apologies. The magical unicorn metal includes the bracelet

904L = now called Oystersteel more marketing from Rolex to make it sound better. But in the real world in today's mainly pampered watches no real advantage over the industry norm 316L.Expect Rolex changed the name because once Rolex was the only one using it, but now a few other brands like Xoskeleton do now.The main difference between 316L over 904L it has slightly more Molybdenum(Mo)approx 2% more, approx 1-2% more Crome(Cr) 1% copper(Cu) and approx 10% more nickel and thats it.And 904L is no harder than 316L, fact 904L will show scratches more easily than 316L, so if you are not in a high salt/acid environment 24/7 no real advantage. The secret of long life with any modern SS watch is regular washing in soap and water, plus normal routine service. Then no matter the fancy name of the SS, they will all last a lifetime and beyond.

It’s getting far afield from horology—or whatever we’re calling this discussion. But, I appreciate the compliment as to my pic. The dog is the cute one, anyway ;-). I’m also guessing the author didn’t know I’m actually gay. Don’t worry—we don’t take every compliment as a come-on. ;-)

Time to unsubscribe, I guess. The thread didn't need to exist in the first place, and now it's getting a second life for an even worse reason.
