Size of orig Bracelet for Nato replace

Hello, I am in need of some info...

I have a late 80's Datejust (36mm) w/ 78360 band w/ 580 ends.

The clasp has broken at a joint, and Rolex is telling me I have to pay $2,000 for a new bracelet.

Since I have newer stainless watches I was thinking of swapping to a Nato band to see how it looks.

My question, how many mm should the Nato band be.

I have heard the numbers both 18mm and 20mm for my watch but I figure one of you will know....

Thank you, John
