Getting an Appraisal

Greetings Ladies and Gentlemen,

After reading the threads on the topic here, I decided to get my Explorer I insured with Jewelers Mutual. When I gave them a ring, however, they said they required a US appraisal - I got mine from an AD in the UK when I purchased the watch a few months ago.

I popped down to my local AD here in San Francisco and they quoted me $150 for an appraisal, which didn't seem too bad, but they said they would hold onto it for three weeks. They could rush it for an extra $50 where I could have it back the same day, but that the paperwork would still a few weeks to come though.

Is this usual?

Many thanks,

Rohan
