Also if you leave the Hostas in pots they will not over winter too well. In your climate the root systems will freeze killing the plants. What you might do for the winter is heavily insulate the potted Hostas and they probably will then be okay.....

I'm also glad your Clematis made it, I figured it was just late but you never know with winter what will live and what will die!!!

Yes, I did try the beer thing Leo, but there are so many Hostas in different locations that it's a pain to keep up with even though it's effective. I've tried to make my gardening less labour intenstive as I've aged. Usually the stuff I have in pots, I take out and put them into the ground for the winter. Seems to work ok.
