Time setting question

3135 movement (sub,datejust, etc).

Scenario: Time is past midnight and date has advanced to current date.

Now I’m traveling east, can I set time counter-clockwise into previous date or do I need to quick-set the date?

Last night I tried setting counter-clockwise from Oct 3 to Oct 2 before I departed on a flight. Date wouldn’t reverse and then when time passed midnight again, it wouldn’t advance.

Is this damaging to the watch?

Thanks
