Replacing a pen sac
I just picked up this Esterbrook with a 2314-M nib (Relief Medium Oblique) for $19.20 including shipping. I tied to un-screw the nib section and it was frozen. When I lifted the lever I heard a crack which told me that the sac had harden and broke.
I soaked the nib section in water changing the water and rinsing for about 3 hours and could finally un-screw the nib. The sac was left in the barrel so I used a cotton swab to pull it out. I soaked the nib section in cold water, removed the nib, and then using an X-acto knife I carefully cut away the old sac from the nib section and cleaned it thoroughly. Next I cut the sac so the top end would be just short of the top if the lever. I then put shellac on the nib section where the sac goes over it and pulled the sac onto it using o-ring pliers. I then let it dry overnight and filled it.
