how do you tell if it is galling or thread splitting??

In a private message another member mentioned to me about thread splitting.

The way thread splitting was explained to me is that the case back thread actually splits at the crest of the thread causing it to burr the mid case inner threads, locking the case back from going further on or reversing off while in the process of either removing the case back or screwing it down. Therefore, it can happen at any position while screwing the back on or when taking the back off. Scary!!!

I would imagine that this phenomena is different from galling but with the same results. Is there any way to tell if it is one or the other?? Has anyone ever had this experience?? Thanks in advance for any feedback
