At my Rolex watchmakers shop today (Chamosa in Dallas

) and picked up a 1996 watch industry pricing catalog. Flipped to Rolex and had to re-read the retail prices to make sure I was reading correctly:

Explorer $3050
Daytona $3050
16610 Sub $3150 or maybe $3200

The Daytona was priced right with other stainless models and now it far exceeds their retail pricing.
When and why did their pricing strategy for the Daytona change?
