Rolex explorer history I don't understand

I read the story of the exp, which basically Rolex made a watch for the people working in caves or area not well lighted, the the reason of the orange hand and the bezel like the gmt, but I don't see all the features on the first version, so really it doesn't make sense. Can you guys chime me?
