Gold thru buckle start date?

I recently bought this watch on eBay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/321262934350...84.m1423.l2648

I am wondering what year Rolex started introducing the gold thru the buckle? A buddy of mine said he thought the gold thru buckle didn't start until 2003. The eBay ad says this was manufactured in 2001. It says that the watch is Solid End Link but the picture shows holes in the case?

What do you think?

Sorry for the dumb questions, but I am a first time Rolex buyer.
