President band stretch

I had an 80's model DD, and for it's age the band stretch really wasn't all that bad. My father-in-law's is his everyday though and has been for 20 years. I think I could stick my pinky through some of the links. Ok, maybe I'm exaggerating just a little, but it's substantial.

I tried a new one on a few months ago when I took my DD to my AD, and he told me that the new ones won't have the problems with stretch. Any truth to this? I know they made them heavier. Did they upgrade the band somehow to account for that?
