Need Help With Identification

hey all.
I know that the forum members are the smartest in the world so I was hoping someone might know what this sink is exactly and where it might have come from as well as its purspose.
I foung it at a flea market and it is very heavy and made of high quality wood.the top comes off of the pedistal and there is a drain in the top.
it looks art deco to me,but if it where a sink then why would the top come off?
any help would be greatly appreciated.
cheers
