What to do with 1680 sub
Hi all, I registered for this forum over a year ago but this is my first post here. A few years ago my father passed away and I subsequently came into possession of a Rolex watch that he had bought in Switzerland sometime during the 1970s. About a year ago I posted some pictures of the watch on another watch forum and was a little overwhelmed by responses I received with conflicting opinions on what to do with the watch, the money needed, work, etc. Keep in mind I am a college student so funds are albeit limited and my knowledge of watches is very, very limited. So I decided to just store the watch and come back to it later. Now I am back home for the summer with some free time and some extra cash to spend so I thought getting back to the Rolex would be a good idea.
From what I was told, the watch is a Meters first Red Submariner. The original bezel insert was lost and the watch's service history is a complete mystery to me although it was suggested the watch was probably serviced at some point. As I understand, originality is where the value lies in this watch. Being a heirloom, I would never sell this watch but I would love for it to retain it's value as much as possible. I know that a period correct bezel would be expensive and hard to find, but I understand I could always just get a replacement bezel insert and source the correct bezel later down the road. My goal is to get this watch fixed up a bit so that I could wear it. So I welcome all opinions and would love to get some advice on my course of action. Here are a few pictures that I have. I can always take more if needed. I apologize for the photos as all I have is my phone to take them. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
