If the employee is at work during business hours, it makes no difference if they are sitting down staring at the wall or helping a potential customer. The owner is still paying them either way. I personally would do it for free to build relationships with new potential clients.
You have a great work ethic that will pay dividends down the road. I have found that teamwork and building relationships will get you much, much further in life than being cutthroat ever will.
