It is to differentiate it from the WG model. You used to be able to get the WG with both smooth and fluted. About 2 or 3 years ago the smooth option was killed off. The only reason for doing so as far as I can see is so that the only white metal DD with a smooth bezel is the platinum. The ice blue dial also serves the same function but not everyone who goes for the platinum model goes for that dial.
