Some people have palates that will only skew towards a particular style. I like a variety of regions, but certain ones don't appeal as much to me (ahem.....most Italian).

Otherwise, read up on the region/varietal from knowledgeable consumers and reviewers, figure out what's mentioned frequently as having good QPR (quality to price ratio), and see if your palate agrees. If so, then invest in some higher priced bottles, as well as older examples, and see if your appreciation grows.
