ID when buying a watch from the US

Hi All,

I'm based in Europe and am looking to buy a watch in the US (and ship it to friend of mine in the US which I will collect next time I am over).

The watch dealer has told me they want me to sign a credit card form, and provide a foto of both the back and front sides of my driving license and credit card.

Is this normal ??
I am extremely uncomfortable sending this information to someone regardless of who they are - as they basically have my identity ?!

Cheers
FC
