What is the big deal about GMT watches?

Why would you own one if you don't really travel much to distant time zones? I am in the US, can easily figure out time anywhere in other US time zones and other Asian, European, and African Countries using simple mental arithmetic. Why would you need a Rolex GMT or any other brand GMT? The dial on these watches looks more cluttered than their non-GMT counterparts. I am on the list for a Rolex GMT, mainly for the look and not the GMT function. I am thinking about why I actually need one.
