Right box? Rolex 14060 submariner

Hi,

I've bought a submariner 14060 from 2000 with box and papers. Only it is a box with a placeholder instead of the cushion. This results in the fact that the watch doesn't fit in the box when closed. The AD told me that this is the original box and that the box was only used to show the watch with the box open. When the watch was bought they would put the it in the box instead of using the placeholder.

It this correct and is it possible that the box is original with the submariner?

Thanks! Thomas
