Bali Island Of The Gods.

Bali Island Of The Gods.

Now my favourite place on this planet after being beneath the Red Sea in the other underwater world is the island of Bali.Spent almost two years there with short runs in between Singapore and back to the UK.Now for all of you that have seen my back tattoo This is the artist that made it possible.A great artist he and one of his sisters picture below. She does the hand painting on to T-Shirts, and a truly amazing artist. Now these T-Shirts take many hours to paint, but time well costs nothing on Bali, not like in the west. These eggs below painted by her brother in the picture, again by the detail take several hours to do one,and can be bought for as little as $5.Now In Balinese culture if you are the first born ( male or female ) you will be called either Putu, Wayan or Nengah. Second born will be called, Made or Kadek, third born Nyoman, Ika or Kamang, fourth born Ketut. If you are fith born you go back to one.Only a few of the high born Balinese have a second sir name like us in the west. Finally there is a given name, which might be something like Yuliasih for a girl and Jembrana for a boy.

Sorry pictures are hard to capture,it must be the high gloss
finish and the egg shape and enlarged quite a bit to show the detail.

Bali rice terraces on the way back from a dive at menjangan Island.

One of a pair Ketut painted for me in the Balinese style.

Yes Paulie Bali is quite a amazing island, where time does not matter at all.I have watched his sister painting the Tee-shirt,they had a pitch just off the beach where I helped out in the diving school. She would be there for hours just painting one,and was lucky to sell to tourist, for if she was lucky around $5.But in 2000 on Bali I could live almost like a king,on less than $100 a week because the locals accepted us as one of them.We made a lot of friends there, but like every place on this world, you will have good and bad. With no industry to speak of except the tourist trade, which is the main employer. And back in 2000 the average wage, say for a hotel worker was around $25-$35 a month plus there food and uniform.Goods off the tourist tracks was very very cheap, but even in the tourist places a hell of a lot cheaper than back home. And I can remember my friend Benny, getting married and the hotel where he worked gave him a new 100,000 Rupiah note for a wedding gift. The first one he had ever had in his hand, now 100,000 Rupiah note is only around $10.
