The photographs are misleading. I have the Oyster Perpetual 34mm black dial and the Oyster Perpetual 36mm white dial. Both look great and I couldn't pick one over the other.

What is misleading is that the photograph shows a distinctly black dial. In fact, the dial appears in most lighting as medium gray. It is also sunburst and so the color of the dial is dynamic. A photograph can't show this. So in the comparison you are showing, one can't really see what the differences are going to look like.

The "black" dial is quite impressive and the dial itself is a main attraction to the watch. With the white dial, the focus is more on the hour markers and how the reflect light. For some reason, the reflections are more impressive with the white dial.

I am in no way criticizing what you are doing. The term "misleading" is meant to describe the phenomenon of two dimensional photography and what it cannot capture. In the case of the gray dial, it shows it as black. In general, that dial only looks black with more subdued lighting.

Black, it is more versatile. Unless you have other black dial watches, then white. Try 36mm.

I am curious why people feel this way. White matches more colors than black does, especially if you adhere to a no brown and black philosophy. But even if you don’t, black and white match at least as much as each other.

I would understand black being more versatile than, say, a green tinted Milgauss.

But I personally don’t see any difference in the versatility of a white and black faced OP.

White OP39 for me. I would go Explorer if I was going to go black dial.

Thanks for the replies. I myself actually like both equally. Bought the black one to celebrate the birth my first boy (and pass on eventually). When we found out a 2nd boy would come I had a good reason to buy a second Rolex.

First wanted to buy a white one also in 34mm, but that actually seemed to have less presence and felt too small (contrary to popular believe that white wears larger). 36mm also wasn’t an option as I don’t like the double batons. So pretty happy to have found a good deal on this white 39mm OP that was barely used. Feels like a completely different watch but just shares the simple beauty.

White 39. I recently picked up the blue and love it. If the opportunity presents itself I may get a white 39 as well. Or even better, if they come out with the olive green in 39. I’m a little bored with black dials.

Between black and white, white is more classic and versatile due to matte dial. The best would be a Classic blue in 39 mm like the one Rolex makes in 36mm. That would be great!

OP39 white dial.

It’s probably the loveliest white dial Rolex currently produce. It’s a half way house between ivory and plain white. Pretty much perfect.

Both have dials that deserve a little scrutiny. The black sunburst is subtle.

But I have a few black dials, so it would be white for me. This white changes appreciably in different light and is a delight. Sometimes almost silver, then eggshell. My next watch could be this, or the IWC Mark XVIII in white, which also has this quality.
