The secret of happiness, you see, is not found in seeking more, but in developing the capacity to enjoy less. -Socrates

As soon as you ask yourself "How many is too many, really" then you know you have just the right amount.

love the answers. I have hence begun my mission towards less than 10. I once couldn't imagine less than 20, but started looking at some of the watches I own, and as much as I love them, can't justify continuing to own them.

I think it is good to settle on 4-7, but to get to that core collection you ought to have been thru 20-30. Got to sow your watch oats before you settle down.

For me, there are far too many watches from different manufacturers to to have just 2 or 3. If i can get a core collection of 2/3 watches from each brand id be content

None is too many if it’s what you love and want to collect

Currently have 10 "luxury pieces" in rotation. Plenty of sub $200 watches that don't see the light if day anymore. Still casually pursuing new pieces, but I would say not in a hurry to pick one up. Last purchase was my white DaytonaC Dec 2017. I would say too many is N+1.. Would love to pick up a PP /VC / AP / ALS at some point.

Just curious. When is a watch considered a “luxury piece”?
Based on brand? Price? Material? |

Own: 6 Rolex, 3 Omega, 2 Breitling, 1 JLC, 3 Garmin, 1 Casio. I think I have enough watches. . Well, there's a Green face DD I have my eye on. :-). I guess I qualify as a watch collector. Anyone want to talk about cameras or fly rods? :-)

Three seems to work well for my lifestyle.
A casual sub, a slightly dressier DJ, and a beater.

I noticed a post the other day asking almost the same question put differently. The quantity is defined by the passion you have to wear each and every individual piece and therefore there is no set number. I got as high as 12 now I sit at 5 all of which are grails I have aspired too. Whilst I always dream of more and work to convince myself how I may need that new piece I often remind myself that having too many becomes a burden after a while. The logistics of Keeping, storing boxes and watches, maintaining a safety deposit box etc can quickly take the passion out of the hobby.
